There was in the 20th century a popular view among certain Protestant circles that this a prophecy against the Vatican. The reasoning: At the time of Revelation being written it was immediately and widely known that Rome was known as the city built on 7 hills. The contrast is between God's pure virgin bride and a disgusting filthy whore. All of the things listed that made her wealthy (like the spice trade, slaves, ivory and on and on) were the trade controlled by the Jesuits/ Catholic "monarchy". Martyrs. The picture of a woman riding on a beast is Greek mythology about "Europa" being carried away across the sea on a bull to the shore of another country. The prophecy shows God "remembered" Babylon, meaning He was looking into her past. Since there was no Greek word for an explosion, it has been taken for an image of a nuclear bomb detonated at Catholic headquarters while others burn its churches.
