How can I be closer to the lord?

Hi, Top of my head, well no, but it isn't cut and paste either.:)

It is a very short articulation of 35 years of being humbled by my awesome creator.

Funny, as I start to serve God directs, as I sit ( Claiming  to be waiting on the Lord ), God chastises. It is just the way it has been  for me.

Practical experience: Looking for a new home church, I found a tremendous pastor teacher, but the building oh my,  and the toilets, worse than a New Mexico desert gas station.   And; I sat listening to the  wonderful presentation of the Word and I complained, and then  there was a leak in the roof and  I complained. Next thing I knew ( long story shortend ) I was an employee, my responsibility? Fix it.  My vast knowledge in management and property development and leadership ( all my then personal opinion of myself)  was used by God to push on a rope there for 20 years, 14 as an employee,  the "facilities manager" of the 9 acres of buildings. There I labored hard many hours every week, hands on, often very dirty work, with many others. We ripped out toilets and stalls in 13 public restrooms, nasty restrooms and made them impressive clean facilities. Some of those restrooms had 16 stations in them. Then I had to supervise the custodial staff, and be the custodial staff often as well.

Humbling? Yep, but many a saint visited our accomplishment and were "comforted" and became regular attendees, (ha) and members of that local body of Christ Jesus, where they heard and were lead to the word of God by some really excellent teachers. And I got to push on a rope there till one day, my body gave out, literally just popped, and God showed me, it is His time set  for a new generation to come along and push on the rope.  God provided them, younger, smarter, faster, good  family men, well trained in service to our Lord Jesus, and in the word of God.

So my experience tells me God uses those that will "push on the rope", be humbled, shake off personal pride, and  higher standing as perceived by ones self. The pleasure is in the service to God, much  of it quiet and often solitary service but done by so many brothers and sisters each with their own humbling lead from God the Holy Spirit for the sake of the gospel of Jesus to the glory  of God the Father.

It has been a wondrous lesson for me, so off the top of my head? No, not so much as  from the callouses of my hands and the fatigue of my mind, pumped up by the knowledge that God is preparing yet another generation even now, as  the younger men and women prepare their own children, perhaps much as God has prepared us, - to work as Jesus' bond-servants.

Sorry, I got a little wordy there. Happens sometimes when led and the fingers move without even the top of my head seeming to be involved. Instead just the heart, one heart so appreciative of what God has done for this awful sinner against him, the Holy Spirit having turned me about.

Back to the thread topic: Just do, by prayer ? Yes. By listening? Yes. But mostly by  doing what one had not expected to be called  to do, and then learn to do it as  well as one can do given the strength and talent and gift, doing it no matter how humbling for the Glory that is our God, and not for self.

Yes, very nice post....living the scriptures as we are supposed to do Jas 1v22  be a DOER of the Word ! in any way possible whether by thought or action.

John 14:17 NLT
[17] He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

with you and in you.

shalom!  Be blessed!

Thanks for reply. Are you saying that when we know the Holy Spirit and He lives WITH us now, we need to ask Him again to also be IN us ?

Constantly play praise music where you can.   Pray when you think of someone.   Pray for someone you are lusting for.

Pray when you hear a siren for those involved.   If there is a death or serious injury that may get them to think about life and where they are going.

Hi Betha, i will tell you my testimony of what the Lord revealed to me and my daughter.

The Lord sent the 3 of us to a mission abroad, me and my 2 daughters.

While on the way to the airport, the Lord led me to worship Him throughout the journey to the airport. So it was a very beautiful early morning trip. At the check in counter, the lady asked us of our visa, and i was totally blanked because i forgot to bring or be reminded that we need visa for this country, we had visa but its in the old passport and i forgot to remind the girls to check and bring, but i had mine because the Lord led me to bring mine to process my other visa during my spare time, and my other daugter had hers on her passport, but my other daughter left hers at home. After realizing this situation i quickly inquired the Lord, and prayed if He wants us to proceed, (the Lord said yes) and i prayed that to show us favor that the passport with the visa can arrive before the plane leaves. The airline staff were very helpful to us, and i quickly instructed my son to hurry and get the passport at home and to have it brought back to the airport, to make the story short, the passport with the visa did arrived, (God is so faithful) but we, me and my other daughter were told to board the plane first, then just 5 minutes before the scheduled time, the plane started to leave the tarmac or parking area, and my daughter called and said the passport arrived, and i said the plane is leaving. By the way, the pilot knew about our situation. So my daughter was left behind, and then during the flight, i asked the Lord what happened, the Lord told me, IF I WILL COME NOW TO TAKE YOU WITH ME, SHE WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. i was shocked, and asked so many questions, the Lord had promised me that He will teach my children. So this is one of His teaching her a lesson and us a lesson. The Lord led me to Romans 8, John14-16, 1John3, and told me, if my daughter keeps on disobeying the Lord and will not allow the Spirit of God to lead her since she wont obey, then He will not live IN her. The Lord then told me about His people, that many thought that He is In them because of the works they do for Him, but the Lord is serious in us obeying Him and not grieving Him.

Only those who do the will of My Father can enter the Kingdom of God.

so back to your question, to answer it. I would take the advice of paul to make our calling and election sure. To examine myself daily if the Spirit of God is in me, if Jesus lives in me. And repent as quickly as the Lord admonish or rebuke me.

So back to what happened, the Lord spoke to my daughter and until she was willing to submit and obey the Lord and repented and understand, the Lord forgave her and then we claim Luke 11:13 for apart from the Lord in us, its not easy to obey and please God, and after that the Holy Spirit lives in her and she was really trasformed. It was not quick and easy thing. The experience taught us a great lesson and made us understand the importance of the Holy Spirit to be in us, and not to grieve Him. He is gentle and sweet and meek, He will not force us. He lets us choose to receive Him or reject Him, if we constantly defy or disobey Him it means we are rejecting Him. If we reject Him, He will leave our body, but He is faithful that He is still with us, to continue to bring us back to Him, for He knows our weaknesses.

all glory to God

Shalom

Thank you Geraldine, profound experience ! I also am very set on obedience being one of God's basic principles....it was violated at the start of the human creation and I feel it must be RE-INSTATED for us to be given a New Start in the New Man God our Father is RE-CREATING. We can not continue in disobedience of the old Nature which got us separated from God way back in Gen 3.

NOW is the time to return a 'changed, converted person ! God bless !

0Just think of God, its ur mind attitude not ur body.

Yes i'm glad that is true, but we should also follow through in our walk and behaviour   see Eph 2 v 10, ....the NEW man must learn to walk/live in obedience . The 'old man is corrupt because of disobedience and sin, hence the NEED for a converted Lifestyle.....shall we continue in sin ? God forbid !

So, whatever we have done before being saved that was AGAINST what GOD wanted that we are to do NO LONGER, must turn from it  - which broadly speaking is DISobedience.....IT got man into the mess we are in today. So please let us by His Grace and Mercy given us turn and NOW OBEY from this NEW beginning, from the FOUNDATION where it all starts !!!

Shalom @Geraldine

What a fascinating testimony!  Thank you for sharing it.

It's so thrilling to hear of someone speak about the Spirit with the same way I have learned about the Spirit.

Love & Shalom

My boyfriend and I got saved about 6 months ago. When we first got saved it was such a beautiful experience. We both felt so compelled by the spirit to learn more about God and draw close to him. But within the past 2 months or so we have started to back slide. Not reading our bibles, not praying, instead of watching Christian content we’ve started back on watching more of worldly things, giving in to sexual sin, etc. We’ve had dozens of convos of doing better but now he doesn’t seem interested. I’ve recently within the past 2 weeks finally got back to reading the word everyday and trying to stay more persistent with my prayer life, but it seems he is still struggling with finding motivation. He has had issues in the past with sex addiction and women and when we first got saved it really helped him a lot. Both of us really. And now that we’ve started to backslide I’ve recently discovered he has been talking sexually with other girls via text. I’m fearful for him and I want to help deliver him from this, not for my own selfish purpose but because he needs it and needs God more than he needs the world. Please help! I love him very much and don’t want to see him lose that beautiful relationship with god and fall back into this vicious cycle of sin, nor do I. Advice is really appreciated.

Baptist if it matters. My friend goes to a public school and she's struggling with her faith. She's concerned because she doesn't want to have these doubts but she does. She wants to have strong faith again and I want to help her but I'm not sure how. Can anyone give me some advice?
    • By FindingHim
Hi there! I am going to start off by giving a bit of a backstory, and please hear me out by reading all of this because I am in dire need right now.

I grew up in a lovely home with Baptist parents who attended church every Sunday. However, I hit very traumatic times at about 7 years old, and now I am 16, going on 17, and my life is healing from the trauma of divorced parents, dealing with calling defax on my own mother for emotional, verbal, and sometimes physical abuse, hating my father for years due to my mother calling him unworthy every chance she got- only to find that my father did everything he could to make me realize he meant no harm, and all the mental issues which came with these life experiences. Shortly after turning 12, four years into my nearly 10-year real-life conflict, I found myself falling far from God. Although I had become fully saved according to the Baptist faith and believed with all my heart that God was my savior and my all at age 10, I fell far from Him only two years later. Two years later, at 12, and hardly 12 at that, I text my friend late one summer night.
"I don't know that I believe in God anymore," I sent her, crying my eyes out because all I needed right then was someone to pull me back to God and say that I needed to hold on. I desperately needed someone to grab my ears and pull me up saying, "Hello!! Jesus is alive! He is alive! And He loves you more than you'll ever comprehend!"
But, the reality was far from this. My friend responds less than a minute later.
      "I am an Atheist."
My heart dropped at the message. But... strangely enough, it later was found with relief. I felt ACCEPTANCE for falling from Him! It sounds crazy because it is. I researched for a long time, mainly in the wrong places, and I found myself to identify as an Atheist. This lasted for years, all the way until a month or so ago to be frank. I am going to be 17 in July and going into the 12th grade next year, and I believe this all happened in the summer of going into 6th or 7th grade, which would have put me at 11 or 12. So for 5, possibly 6, years I have been very lost and falling blind of God. I fell into believing I was transgender, from female to male, to believing I was gay and dating a girl almost a full year. Many, many tragic things followed this initial start of trauma when my parents got a divorce at 7 years old.

Now, having all that said... I still feel a strong incomplete pit in my life, this being my relationship with God. I still question my sexuality today. I believe that being abused for all those years led me to believe I was homosexual because beforehand, I never EVER questioned my sexuality. I was your typical "boy-crazy" little girl who would go to their mom after school and say, "Guess what mommy! [Enter name here] talked to me today! I was so nervous!" I can tell you confidently now that I know I am a beautiful, straight female who deserves just as much as everyone else. In my heart, I feel that. However, I hesitate to answer so confidently in person because it takes denying my past conflictions to find my true self deep within me that, yes, I am that person. For a long time I denied this person that I was because of the many times my mother would tell me that I wasn't her daughter, I wasn't what she wanted, and I was a mistake through and through. I believe truly, within my heart, that abuse can cause lifetime problems such as this. Abuse, especially that in childhood, does not just affect your personality, your social life, and your way of coping with life situations. Abuse affects your lifestyle, your beliefs, and all the critical things of yourself.

I am stuck. My ex-best friend and I started talking recently. We grew up together and shortly after I went from a true Christian to Atheist, we fell apart from one another. In the past month, we found each other via social media and I have come to find, not to my surprise, that she is still very faithful and connected to God. Even when we were little and very close, I was inspired by her connection with God and trust in Him, despite our different beliefs. She was raised Apostolic Pentecostal. I was raised Baptist. However, now that we have reconnected, I have caught her up with everything that happened to me in the past years that we haven't talked. She amazes me still at her immaculate trust in God. She is now involved in leading many youth groups to teach the Bible to younger kids, as well as attending her own youth group herself. This makes me intrigued in her beliefs since I am currently not under any official belief besides that in which God does indeed exist. My mother is not much in the picture anymore, so I have free reign to explore all sorts of Christianity that I please without fear of being bashed or shunned for doing anything other than Baptism.  I have been looking into Apostolic Pentecostal all day, trying to actually understand what the belief is all about compared to Baptism, since that is what I know best, and it makes so much more sense to me compared to what I grew up with. Is there anybody who is an Apostolic Pentecostal that could please help guide me and help me in understanding the beliefs? I am very intrigued by this way of praise and church-going. So please, if you read all of this, which I hope you did because it contributes so much to my reasoning behind this, and you are an Apostolic Pentecostal, please give me information on your beliefs and ways of praising and keeping faith. I am finding God again, and I do not plan on losing Him this time. Not again.

I was raised in a religious family, but it's been six years since I've truly felt connected to God.
Does anyone have any advice for me?

It’s been a year that I’ve been under the Gospel along with my parents as well. I understand that sometimes I may act childish but my father lets it be known. He will say things like “you haven’t grown” and “I can see the malice in your heart” or “how can you do this, but then go to church and listen to sermons” or “you need to read your bible more”. It’s just every time he throws our Christianity hard in my face and maybe he should, but it discourages me a little because maybe I am not growing at all. He talks about submitting to them as parents, but I honestly don’t know how to because they way they treat me is a harsh to where I just don’t want to be around them anymore. Are there specific scriptures that can help guide me?
      thank you.
