The GPS took us down so many back roads before we got to our destination. It does the same when we go visit friends in Indiana. On the way back, we bought a map to see where the GPS was taking us. Out of interest, I wondered who still uses paper maps and wondered what some of your experiences has been. I've never used one myself, but you may be able to alter it under Settings. I normally use Google Maps, but I also make sure to make use of their streetview feature. Placemarkers and what not are placed by people, so they aren't always trustworthy. So, they could indicate that the store is "here," but it's actually tucked away around the corner. Worse yet, some placemarkers are old and show businesses that are no longer open - we had a small grocery store in town that shut down nearly 2 years ago, but it still shows on Google. If I had to go on a road trip though, i'd probably take a paper map. I don't use a cellphone, and even if I did, i'd want to conserve the battery. But not a lot. Use Google maps on my phone a lot though, but I use it with a different goal. Today, I much prefer to have Siri give me guff, tell me which lane to be in, as I go through Atlanta at noon or rush hour. When GPS fails to have details at the back lanes of Tennessee I follow the shadows on the roads and read the double yellow lines, noting which side of the road has the odd numbers and which has the even. I don't so much get lost as I do see new scenery along my way. Hey isn't that the same road gang and the same Sheriff's Deputy shotgun guard we saw about an hour ago on the other side of the road? Why is the sun on the right shoulder instead of off the left? I once fell asleep with a new employee driver going between Palm Springs and Los Angeles. Thought I had guided my driver well enough once we hit Riverside, and that he couldn't miss LA from there. I awoke to his question, "what are those things out there? ' I looked out the window and said "barrel cactus and yucca trees", still half napping. Then it hit me- oh oh where are we? I asked, "Hey do you remember any signs along this road?" Not even in unfamiliar places. I seem to have an unerring sense of direction and an ability to figure out the best route. My husband on the other hand .... we joke that faithful indian guide cant find his way out of a paper bag. I don't own a cell phone so I either depend on maps, which I have many, or the GPS which came with the car ... but I don't like.
