DAY 28 - PSALM 24 [Book 1]

The King of Glory

A Psalm of David.

 The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,
    the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has founded it upon the seas
    and established it upon the rivers.

3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not lift up his soul to what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the Lord
    and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah

7 Lift up your heads, O gates!
    And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, mighty in battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates!
    And lift them up, O ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord of hosts,
    he is the King of glory! Selah

Quote

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

Both clean hands and a pure heart are required.

A  person can behave with clean hands, but not have a pure heart.  Example:  Let's say someone died at a church and the bereavement committee is preparing food for the family.  One lady is always asked to bring her German chocolate cake.  She agrees to make is again.

On her way to the family's house to take the cake, she grumbles under her breath, "This is the LAST time I bake this cake for someone I barely even know.  I'm so sick of this.  Don't they know the cost and effort in making this cake?  Don't these people have food anyway?  We always take too much. I'm not doing this again, so help me".

She never once prayed for this family, but was self-absorbed in her own irritation of having to "do" something for someone else.

When she pulls into driveway, she spends a few minutes looking in the rear view mirror making sure her hair and make-up look better than any other woman there.  She gets out, plasters a fake smile on her face, and walks in telling the family how truly and deeply sorry she is.  Other women are there from the bereavement committee tending to household duties and bringing food.  She looks around and thinks, "I'll lie and say that I have a doctor's appointment so I don't have to help out with the family."

Her actions and hands were "clean". She did the right thing by making sure the family wouldn't have to worry about food for a few days.

Her heart was the farthest thing from "pure" than one can find in this situation.  Her heart was vile.

47 minutes ago, pinacled said:

I lift my inner being to you,Adonai;
I trust you, my God.
Don’t let me be disgraced,
don’t let my enemies gloat over me.
No one waiting for you will be disgraced;
disgrace awaits those who break faith for no reason.

Make me know your ways,Adonai,
teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth, and teach me;
for you are the God who saves me,
my hope is in you all day long.
Remember your compassion and grace, Adonai;
for these are ages old.
Don’t remember my youthful sins or transgressions;
but remember me according to your grace
for the sake of your goodness,Adonai.

Adonai is good, and he is fair;
this is why he teaches sinners the way [to live],
leads the humble to do what is right
and teaches the humble [to live] his way.
10 All Adonai’s paths are grace and truth
to those who keep his covenant and instructions.
11 For the sake of your name,Adonai,
forgive my wickedness, great though it is.

12 Who is the person who fearsAdonai?
He will teach him the way to choose.
13 He will remain prosperous,
and his descendants will inherit the land.
14 Adonai relates intimately with those who fear him;
he makes them know his covenant.

15 My eyes are always directed toward Adonai,
for he will free my feet from the net.
16 Turn to me, and show me your favor;
for I am alone and oppressed.
17 The troubles of my heart are growing and growing;
bring me out of my distress.
18 See my affliction and suffering,
and take all my sins away.

19 Consider my enemies, how many there are
and how cruelly they hate me.
20 Protect me and rescue me;
don’t let me be disgraced,
for I take refuge in you.
21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
because my hope is in you.

22 God! Redeem Isra’el
from all their troubles!

Awesome.

DAY 29 - PSALM 25 [BOOK 1]

Teach Me Your Paths

Of David.

 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
3 Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

6 Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

8 Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9 He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

11 For your name's sake, O Lord,
    pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who is the man who fears the Lord?
    Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.
13 His soul shall abide in well-being,
    and his offspring shall inherit the land.
14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,
    and he makes known to them his covenant.
15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,
    for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged;
    bring me out of my distresses.
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,
    and forgive all my sins.

19 Consider how many are my foes,
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!
    Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
    for I wait for you.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
    out of all his troubles.

Should be a daily prayer - sometimes more than once a day - for all.

DAY 30 - PSALM 26 [Book 1]

I Will Bless the Lord

Of David.

Vindicate me, O Lord,
    for I have walked in my integrity,
    and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
    test my heart and my mind.
3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
    and I walk in your faithfulness.

4 I do not sit with men of falsehood,
    nor do I consort with hypocrites.
5 I hate the assembly of evildoers,
    and I will not sit with the wicked.

6 I wash my hands in innocence
    and go around your altar, O Lord,
7 proclaiming thanksgiving aloud,
    and telling all your wondrous deeds.

8 O Lord, I love the habitation of your house
    and the place where your glory dwells.
9 Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,
    nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
10 in whose hands are evil devices,
    and whose right hands are full of bribes.

11 But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
    redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on level ground;
    in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.

 Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
    test my heart and my mind.

This won't be the first time David asks God to "test" his heart and mind.

I really love the end of Psalm 139 where makes the same request only with more detail.  David asks God to "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!"

What makes David a man after God's own heart as Paul says in Acts 13 is the fact that he had the confidence and trust in God to ASK God to "test and try" him

I have to be 110% honest here.  I don't know if my faith is as strong as David's to ask God to "test and try" me.

What if the test means losing someone I love? Suffering with an illness? Losing my home?

He's not asking for a simple pop quiz.  He's asking God to TEST HIM to prove both his integrity and to see if there anything wicked in him.

A test means the student has to endure something, not the teacher.

David is not asking something simple here.  If he asks this - so should we.  Especially since the psalms were meant to be sung and sung to God.

Maybe our spiritual growth is stagnant because we don't ask.

DAY 31 - PSALM 27 [Book 1]

An Exuberant Declaration of Faith

A Psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

2 When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh,
My enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell.

3 Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident.

4 One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.

5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle he shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.

6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me;
Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.

8 When You said, “Seek My face,”
My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.”

9 Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help; do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation.

10 When my father and my mother forsake me,
Then the Lord will take care of me.

11 Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.

12 Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries;
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.

13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

14 Wait on the Lord; be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!

DAY 32 - PSALM 28 [Book 1]

The Lord Is My Strength and My Shield

Of David.

To you, O Lord, I call;
    my rock, be not deaf to me,
lest, if you be silent to me,
    I become like those who go down to the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
    when I cry to you for help,
when I lift up my hands
    toward your most holy sanctuary.

3 Do not drag me off with the wicked,
    with the workers of evil,
who speak peace with their neighbors
    while evil is in their hearts.
4 Give to them according to their work
    and according to the evil of their deeds;
give to them according to the work of their hands;
    render them their due reward.
5 Because they do not regard the works of the Lord
    or the work of his hands,
he will tear them down and build them up no more.

6 Blessed be the Lord!
    For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
    and with my song I give thanks to him.

8 The Lord is the strength of his people;
    he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
    Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
