John the Baptist is saying what Jesus himself also said. You will know Christians by there deeds. We are all to put into practise in our daily lives the standard of behaviour that Jesus commands us to live by. That is the ten commandments as understood by the sermon on the mount. Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Gal 5:24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
