All about Us. The apostle Paul tells his disciple Timothy to tell others in the Lord to be faithful and be patient and endure hardship. Then as a worker speaking the truth to - `Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings for they will increase to more ungodliness.` (2 Tim. 2: 14 - 16) This exhortation is all the more relevant in today`s discussions as there is so much error around. The apostle Paul reveals this - `…that we should no longer be children tossed to and fro and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive, but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the Head - Christ…` (Eph. 4: 14 & 15) Thus said, I believe one of the main errors that trick believers as they read God`s word, is that it is `all about us.` We know God`s word is for us to read and learn from, but is everything written `all about us?` `And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He (Christ) expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.` (Luke 24: 27) Thus I see that God`s word is the Father revealing His Son to us. As we read further we find that God has purposes for Israel, the nations, and the Body of Christ. When this is understood then God`s word becomes clearer. However, if we think that God`s word is `all about us,` then it becomes like muddy water, just a muddle. What do you believe? And can you give an example? It tells of His patience with mankind, and especially with Israel, His righteousness and justice, His omniscience, His love, His character. Jesus came to reveal the Father. He did and said only the things His Father gave Him to do and say. His obedience was perfect, even to the cross. Yet we do need to pay attention to the Holy Spirit as we read the Word. He does reveal our sin to us and how short we fall of God's glory. He also shows us how to overcome sin by walking in the Spirit and setting our minds on the things of the Spirit. He tells us how to live and overcome our problems by practicing the sermon on the mount. No, it is not all about us. However, it is meant to be applied to our lives and not glossed over as head knowledge. We would be in equally grave error if we did not apply God's word to our lives. 1
