Lord Jesus knew He would be arrested at Gethsemane garden, He could run away and save His life but He didnt, He choosed to defend the truth with His life so mankind may be saved. Never did God ever asked them to become His martyrs. Jesus Did ask us to give our testimony (martyria in the Greek)…. Often times giving our testimony results in our martyrdom, Like Stephen. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
