An interesting bit of news. This is not a common occurance nor does this happen every night when the volcanos do spew gasses into the stratosphere. Ive been watching the sunsets in my area and have seen the purple colors. Quite spectacular. More information is on the link as well as a couple of photos of sunsets.

Sky watchers are reporting a strange color in the sunset sky: purple. This is a sign of volcanic activity. The Raikoke volcano in the Kirul Islands and the Ulawun volcano in New Guinea have recently spewed sulfurous gases into the stratosphere, altering the palette of sunsets around the world.

Usually we have the orange and yellow sunsets, but I have seen a couple with pale lavender.   It was very pretty.

I saw a purplish / red sunset a few years ago.. We had some volcanic activity in South America and on some islands in the very southern Atlantic.. The clouds went around the world and where over Australia..   We often have yellowish Red sunsets, usually when we are having a dry period.. That's when a the winds kick up a lot of dust in central Australia and you have a lot of dust in the atmosphere..

There was Purple Haze, Purple Rain. Now we have Purple Sunsets?

Should be Red Sails In The Sunset.

Yes I have, one time while camping in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at 7,000 feet as the Sun was setting I looked out over the mountains West towards the San Joaquin Valley and they were purple, ...verses from a childhood song we sang in school came to mind.

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee,

Lord bless

I would love to see that! I have a thing for taking pictures of sunsets.

But we don't get purple ones where I am.
