God tells us to "be fruitful and multiply". What if you are a Christian who goes through life single and never has any kids or a barren Christian woman or a married couple who have not been able to conceive...What is it that you "multiply"?

Shalom Joni,

You can be fruitful and multiply as a disciple of the Messiah.  Fruitful in good works, acts of love and kindness.  Multiply by sharing the Word and making disciples of others, that the Lord leads across your path.

The whole idea of being fruitful and multiplying is to raise a good seed for the Yahweh, our Father.  In reaching the lost and making disciples of them you are doing just this - in some ways arguably better than just through procreation.

Therefore, if you are asking this question on behalf of yourself, don't be concerned on the matter, as if Yahweh will seek to accuse you on this point.  Many of the women in the early church were virgins by choice, for the sake of the Kingdom, and were blessed.  If you are not having children out of choice or circumstance, you still have a great responsibility to fulfil.  If you do have children, that responsibility does not diminish but only increases.  So either way, bring forth good fruit for the time of harvest, as much as the Spirit enables you to do so.

I hope that makes sense.

Love & Shalom

It must be kept in mind that this is a directive given to Adam and Eve, rather than one given to you personally. While that general principle still exists, "multiplying" is not something everyone is going to do:

Matthew 19:9-12 King James Version (KJV)

9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

Of course "men" does not exclude women from this teaching. As Christians we have been given explicit instruction in the New Testament. When we try to incorporate every command that has been given without keeping it in it's context we can create doctrine that doesn't necessarily apply to us. A good example is there was provision for men to offer up animals as vicarious sacrifice, that they die instead of the sinner and in their place, but despite the command most understand that this does not apply to the Christian, because Christ has offered up Himself and that Sacrifice only had to take place once in order to bring about remission of sins on an eternal basis (Hebrews 10:1-4; Hebrews 10:10-14; Hebrews 10:15-18).

While both marriage and childbearing is normal for the majority, that doesn't mean it applies to everyone. We know that in the Tribulation not having children will be a blessing:

Luke 23:29
For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Likely because many children, whether young or grown will die during that time and it will be a time of grief. Hope that helps.

God bless.

God told that to  Adam when the world was not yet filled with 8 billions people, Solomon guessed God commanded that to him so he took 1000 wives to copulate with. The problem with over population are complex, unemployment, homeless, malnutrition, many poor people in Hong Kong could only rent a cage of 2,5 x 1,5 meters to live in.

The dream of every couple to raise children with good nutrition, good education, good housing n good saving for their future, isnt that the dream which rich people chase after without sharing it with the poor Lazarus ? Thats why it Will be taken when the world is given to the antichrist to enslave mankind n win their souls to hell.

The 'rich' do not have a monopoly on greed.

There is plenty of food for everyone - but its distribution is the issue along with avarice.

Governments play the 'starvation card' in order to further their own selfish ideals. It is a real mess.

Paul tells us that if we have control of our desire, it is better to remain single (1 Cor 7:36-38). That lets some of us off the hook, I think. As for those who can't have kids, they are hardly to blame. I don't really think the Lord was demanding people have children. I think he was just encouraging them to.
