Just read up on it since my CA ID card expired on my birthday yesterday.

In a year you can't go in federal buildings of take certain flights w/o it.

Guess it's a hassle to go for a regular ID, then go back to the DMV if the need arises.

Been ages since visiting & posting. Good to be back. Apologies if the topic's around already.

What does it have in it? A chip?

I just received something in the mail as well since my drivers license is expiring. I elected to get the Real ID only because if I ever needed to get on a flight I don't want to be prohibited from being able to board an airlane because of it. In fact, I wonder what happens if someone has an emergency and needs to get on a flight. Just to get an appointment is about 6 weeks away.

Hi,

Doesn't seem to be a problem as it doesn't take effect until Oct 1, 20220 and most all States have been issuing Real ID compliant Drivers Licenses and State issued ID cards for years. Floridah as example has been issuing them since 2010. Plus the following will work as acceptable ID:

  • Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

It is just  the up to date State Drivers license  with photo ID  with a star in the corner. If you have a license you probably already have it

I plan to get mine in a week or so (my current ID expires on my birthday). It doesn't have a chip, just designates that it's federal and not state.
