Sooner or later a Sunday School Teacher will have a study called "The names of God."  They will use  a study of El Shaddai, El Nisse. etc.  While such studies are interesting and useful, those are not names of 'God, they are some of His attributes.

God has 3 basic names.  God, which is Elohim, LORD in all caps, which is Jehovah and Lord, which is Adonai.

Elohim comes from a word that means "to swear."  From this name we see God's covenant relationship with man.  This name emphasis His love for man.  Elohim is a singular noun with a plural ending.  This name contains the mystery of the Trinity.

When you see LORD all in caps, it is Jehovah.  This name comes from the verb "to be", and means  "one who is what He is,."  It was translated to Moses as "I am that I am.  Jehovah reveals "God as  truth.  It shows One who being love is also righteous and holy and therefore must judge evil.  It is also "God's memorial name.  When we see Jehovah in the Bible, the emphasis is on the law.

When we see Lord, it is Adonai and means "master,"  and expresses a personal relationship between God and man.    Adonai is the plural  of
"Adon and also contains the mystery of the Trinity.

This is a short tutorial video of how to get started with Worthy Christian Forums.

Let me share a little bit of my vision for the ministry in a parable.

Let's say I'm throwing a big party and am inviting the world to the party (the forums) and I want everyone to have a great time, eating (reading through posts being fed), drinking (being encouraged to walk in His Word), and having fellowship with one another.  In Israel, we have Shabbat meals -- and whenever you have 2 Jews -- you have 3 opinions -- it's GREAT to be opinionated.  I encourage discussions ... but during our Shabbat meals ... we never ever get to the point in disagreements whereby food is being tossed and seriously yelling takes place!  And if someone comes into the meal ... and starts throwing food ... and yells at everyone -- what do you suppose the head of the Shabbat meal will do?  He'll escort those causing problems out of the house!  Why?  Because the whole reason for the gathering was to learn from one another ... to have a great time of fellowship!

Some people like to constantly throw food and yell ... they won't last on Worthy ... because they missed the point of the party ... it's a prequel to the true party -- the Lamb's Supper!

All I'm trying to provide is a place to allow true fellowship ... and discussions in love ... in the hopes it will be a catalyst for true REVIVAL based on REPENTANCE!

I hope you have a blessed time at Worthy!

Welcome to Worthy, Omega2xx.

Joh 8:56  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."  Joh 8:57  Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"

Joh 8:58  Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

Joh 8:59  Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Hi @omega2xx

Indeed, blessed be the name of the LORD. Which translated into our alphabet would be, YHVH.

Psalm 113:2-4 2Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. 3From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised. 4The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.  KJV

Welcome to Worthy and God bless you!

Shalom,

David/BeauJangles

I Am that I Am

“God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites:  ‘I AM has sent me to you.'”  (Exodus 3:14)

When Moses stood before God at the Burning Bush inquiring about His name, God understood how important it was that Moses was able to reveal to the Israelites this important piece of information.

In response, God told Moses ‘Ehye Asher Ehye(אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה) or simply ‘Ehye’ (אֶהְיֶה).

In most English Bibles this name is translated as “I Am Who I Am” or simply “I Am.” (Exodus 3:14)

As in all the names that God uses to reveal Himself, this key name of God tells us some essential information about who He is.

The Hebrew alphabet gives a clue to the meaning behind this name.

The fact that it begins with Aleph (אֶ), the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, is indicative of the future tense.  Therefore this name can be translated ‘I Will Be Who I Will Be.’

The Tetragrammaton: YHVH (יהוה)

“God also said to Moses, ‘I am the LORD [YHVH].  I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty [El Shaddai], but by My name the LORD [YHVH] I did not make myself known to them.”  (Exodus 6:2, 3)

In Scripture, God reveals His sacred, four letter proper name.  However, most Jewish people will not speak this personal name out of reverence for His holiness and fear of transgressing the command that forbids using God’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7).

Instead, the term Adonai (my Lord) or Hashem (The Name) is substituted.

This sacred name comprises the following Hebrew letters:  yud, hey, vav, hey—YHVH ( יהוה ).

This name is technically known as the Tetragrammatan, which is a combination of two Greek words meaning four letters.

Since the original Hebrew text did not use vowels, it is impossible to determine the exact pronunciation of this name, and therefore it has been the subject of much speculation and controversy.  It is often transcribed in English as Yahweh or Jehovah.

Instead of using one of these English variations, many English Bible translations print the word LORD (in all caps or small caps to distinguish it from other Hebrew words that are translated Lord).

They do this out of tradition or respect for the name of God.

Welcome Omega2xx,

We will never fully understand God. He is too big for our comprehension, and just too Big to have a single name. Thank your sharing and welcome to Worthy!

PS: Because of your interest in this topic,  you might find it interesting to compare what is done in Bibles in other languages in addition to the English examples you posted .

Good point :)

The Bible has been translated into many different languages apart from the english language.   I think it would be interesting to see how words are translated into different languages.

It's great to see that you know this fact. However, are you aware that 'Jehovah' is a mistranslation?

The Name of Elohim is Yahweh, or more accurately pronounced "YAH-oo-eh".

You can find a short study on the Name and its variants - Jehovah, Yahovah, Yahuah etc on this page

Again, welcome to the forum my friend.

Love & Shalom

Thank you for you welcome.  I hope we can have some fruitful discussions.

Let me suggest that Jehovah is not a mistranslation.  Surely the scholars who translate the Hebrew into English know the Hebrew word is not literally Jehovah.  They use "Jehovah" to give those who  study the  Bible  a way to pronounce a word that cant be pronounced in English.

In the final analysis, the word used is not that important.  What is important is what the word says about God.  I said "Elohim" emphasis God's love and Jehovah reveals  God's as  truth and emphasizes God's laws.    Actually both put us under the law and both love us.  The first commandment in the Bible  is from the LORD God.

WE put our children under our laws of don't play in the street, eat your vegetables, don;'t do drugs, etc., out of love.

One thing believers in Jewish theology or Christian theology is that God never stops loving us no matter how sinful we might become.  He even loves those who do not believe in Him.

Isa 53:10 - It was Jehovah who sent Jesus to he cross to die for man's sins.

Thanks again for you welcome.

Peace my friend.
