Same here. We simply went on to the next house with porch lights on. Lights out meant that particular resident either forgot to buy candy, couldn't afford it, or wished not to contribute towards the future of cavities for tots and youngsters.  :D

We lived just outside of town so we had to ride bicycles to get to houses....    six to eight miles to get a good sack full of goodies....    we didn't have time for pranks/tricks.   Well until we got older and started scaring all those on bikes...   that was a lot more fun than going to the dentist.

No, because that is family and friends. Trick or treating is demanding candy from strangers.

If you don't teach a kid right then anything at all can cause them to think that they are entitled. Demanding Christmas gifts/birthday gifts from friends and family can be as much as an entitlement as trick or treating.

Demanding? Really? Okay must have been a rough neighborhood.  All  I have ever seen is some happy little kids along with their parents saying hello, showing off their cute costumes and saying "thank you!" when they were acknowledged happily by me and given some nickel treat.  Many  in our neighborhood even go in together, set up tables out front of several homes, then greet and chat with each other and the neighborhood kids.

My previous place of residence has been void of trick or treating for some years, due to to the fact it's now on the border of the barrio. A very rough neighborhood indeed. No one is safe outdoors alone at night.

Agreed.

I've always seen taking candy as more of receiving charity than demanding. Halloween isn't some mandatory holiday, those who want to give out candy do it and those who don't want to don't, it's entirely up to the would-be candy donor.

I thought the smiley face on my post about entitlement would clue folks in that I was joking. But apparently when I explained things further folks didnt realize I was joking.
