Yes Jesus took our place,as the perfect sacrifice he took our punishment that we deserve. We were all born into sin and shaped by iniquity. As we reach the age of accountability, where we understand that were sinners and need a savior. God calls us and we can choose to receive Christ as our savior. We understand that we have sinned and deserve a punishment for those acts of rebellion against God's law. That punishment is an eternal punishment in Hell. Jesus said I'll pay that price for you so you don't have to go there. Through him and him alone is salvation.

Before the cross, Jesus bore all sickness and disease that by his strips we were healed. This is our claim that we can be healed. No matter what, weather mental, emotional, phsyical, we were healed. Just remember, Jesus has done it all for you, all for each one who will receive him.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that who so ever believes in Me shall not perish but have everlasting life.

I would say the answer to your first question is yes.

As for your second question, I have always thought he took the punishment by his death on the cross. He had committed no sin, yet he was killed. In so doing he proved Satan to be a liar, since it was Satan who led people to believe Jesus deserved death.

1 Corinthians 15:12–17 (AV)
12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (AV)
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 John 3:5 (AV)
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

Jesus died for our sins and he had no sin. So, yes, he took the punishment we deserve.

To answer your second question...

The argument can be made that his suffering (which I think is what you are asking) began before the cross.

God the Word became flesh and dwelt among us as the only begotten of the Father (John 1:14). Philippians 2:6-11 states (in the Greek)

while never ceasing to be God, he humbled himself to become human.

We have no reference point to use to get our heads around what a great sacrifice just that was. Even if we were to volunteer to become a one-celled

organism. Still no where close enough comparison to the Lone Creator in the beginning (Isaiah 44:24) did to become a man.

He was literally born in a barn.

He was despised by Herod who tried to kill him when he was around 2 years old.

Joseph wasn't the only one who didn't buy into the virgin pregnancy of Mary (he was later convinced by the angel, of course).

But the neighbors... not so much.

There is a hint of what the gossipers were saying about Jesus of Nazareth in John 8:41 (implying that Jesus was born of fornication).

Tradition holds that the Sanhedrin went as far as to bribe a Roman soldier named Pantera  to claim to be the father of Yeshu (derogatory form of the name of Jesus)

and if memory serves it is actually in the Talmud. In recent times, the rabbis argue that this referred to a different Yeshu.

Point is, the Holy One of Israel faced opposition and false accusations (to the point of being declared demon possessed John 8:48 and other places).

In the Toledot Yeshu, Jesus was accused of stealing a temple ornament and sewing it under his skin to give him sorcerer abilities. ← though untrue it does

lend itself as historical evidence from a hostile source that Jesus did miraculous things which they attributed to black magic since they could not explain it any other way since they refused to believe it was the miraculous.

Jesus' immediate family did not understand him, and none of his brothers and sisters believed in him (or that he was the Messiah) until after his resurrection.

Even his mother Mary sought to take charge of him when his messianic claims seemed outlandish to her (Mark 3:21).

I could go on for many verses what a disappointment his disciples were, to him of course, and what a disgrace the Jewish leadership were who should have been

parading him around as King from day one.

Then came the betrayals, trials and beatings, the crucifixion and the crown of thorns and the spear in his side.

Jesus experienced immense sufferings of agony in the Garden of Gathsemane. Scriptures go into detail concerning this time spent in intercession before the Father. But the final work was on the cross of Calvary. When He said, "It is finished." that made it complete.

I would say Jesus paid the price for our sin on the cross, our punishment was eternal damnation...He did not take that on Himself , through His sacrifice, He relieved us of it

Yes, Jesus took the punishment we deserve and shed His blood for our sins. What do you mean by "before the cross"?

God became a man.

Jesus.

Jesus, who is God in the flesh, God in a human body,  came to restore us to God...... Back into God's  eternal family.

To do this, God as Christ had to die for ALL our Sin.  As its our sin that made us unacceptable to God, so, it had to be dealt with, once and for all, by God.

So, to become acceptable to God, God had to make us acceptable, by dying for our SIN.   And He DID.  And Jesus rose again., and is ALIVE.

God saved us by dying on a Cross, as this  is the full and eternal payment for all our sin that was keeping us apart from God.   And once this penalty was paid by God as Christ on the Cross, for ALL our SIN,  then not only is all our  sin forgiven, including all future sin, but its also FORGOTTEN.... God does not remember that we were ever sinners.  Its as if we've never sinned.   = Born again.  "new Creation in Christ"... New Identity.  Eternal family member in God's family.
God now  only remembers about us,  exactly what Christ has made us, through HIS BLOOD, = forgiven and accepted, forever.

This is SALVATION.   This is Redemption.   This is the Blood Atonement.   And all this is the GIFT of God, freely given,    Because God loves us so much.

This is the GRACE of the Living God.

Thank you Jesus !!

Your first question has already been correctly answered, ...I'll only add that Father had planned from eternity past He was to be crucified on the Cross, which allowed him, ...because He is the sinless God-Man to die, we are taught, "the wages of sin is death," ...but because He was/is sinless He chose the Cross as His instrument of death because:

...being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:  Gal 3:13b

...to allow death to "rule" in His human body only for three days and three nights.

To answer your second question, before the Cross, no, the "punishment" we deserved, the Wrath of God, was poured out on Him "only" while He was nailed to the Cross, His death and Blood was sufficient to pay our sin debt and Redeem us, ...never again will the Wrath of His Father be poured out on Jesus and never again will it be poured out on His Blood bought, Blood Washed children who are "in" Him.

Lord bless

I do not see anything in the Bible that says he took our punishment at all.  When part of a text is quoted people back then, think of the whole chapter or passage.

Psalm 22 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
To the director: To the tune “The Deer of Dawn.”[a] A song of David.
22 My God, my God, why have you left me?
You seem too far away to save me,
too far to hear my cries for help!
2 My God, I kept calling by day,
and I was not silent at night.
But you did not answer me.

3 God, you are the Holy One.
You sit as King upon the praises of Israel.
4 Our ancestors trusted you.
Yes, they trusted you, and you saved them.
5 They called to you for help and escaped their enemies.
They trusted you and were not disappointed!
6 But I feel like a worm, less than human!
People insult me and look down on me.
7 Everyone who sees me makes fun of me.
They shake their heads and stick out their tongues at me.
8 They say, “Call to the Lord for help.
    Maybe he will save you.
If he likes you so much, surely he will rescue you!”

9 God, the truth is, you are the one who brought me into this world.
You made me feel safe while I was still at my mother’s breasts.
10 You have been my God since the day I was born.
I was thrown into your arms as I came from my mother’s womb.

11 So don’t leave me!
Trouble is near, and there is no one to help me.
12 My enemies surround me like angry bulls.
They are like the powerful bulls of Bashan, and they are all around me.
13 Their mouths are opened wide,
like a lion roaring and tearing at its prey.

14 My strength is gone,
like water poured out on the ground.
My bones have separated.
    My courage is gone.
15 My mouth[c] is as dry as a piece of baked pottery.
My tongue is sticking to the roof of my mouth.
You have left me dying in the dust.
16 The “dogs” are all around me—
a pack[d] of evil people has trapped me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.[e]
17 I can see each one of my bones.
    My enemies are looking at me;
    they just keep staring.
18 They divide my clothes among themselves,
and they throw lots for what I am wearing.

19 Lord, don’t leave me!
You are my strength—hurry and help me!
20 Save me from the sword.
Save my precious life from these dogs.
21 Rescue me from the lion’s mouth.
Protect me from the horns of the bulls.[f]

22 I will tell my people about you.
I will praise you in the great assembly.
23 Praise the Lord, all you who worship him!
Honor him, you descendants of Jacob!
Fear and respect him, all you people of Israel!
24 He does not ignore those who need help.
    He does not hate them.
He does not turn away from them.
He listens when they cry for help.

25 Lord, because of you I offer praise in the great assembly.
In front of all these worshipers I will do all that I promised.
26 Poor people, come eat and be satisfied.[g]
You who have come looking for the Lord, praise him!
May your hearts be happy[h] forever.
27 May those in faraway countries remember the Lord and come back to him.
May those in distant lands worship him,
28 because the Lord is the King.
    He rules all nations.
29 The people have eaten all they wanted
and bowed down to worship him.
Yes, everyone will bow down to him—
all who are on the way to the grave, unable to hold on to life.
30 Our descendants will serve him.
Those who are not yet born will be told about him.
31 Each generation will tell their children
about the good things the Lord has done.
