Every lamb that was slain and whose blood was poured out, every offering on flaming, brazen fire, every Day of Atonement, every Yom Kippur, every sprinkling of the blood between the cherubim, every priest who ever sacrificed before God, typified that great revelation of substitution. When the worshiper came with his offering, he took the sacrificial animal, put his hands on its head, and confessed there his sins. The animal was then slain and its blood poured out at the base of the altar. Why? By putting his hands on the head of the animal, he identified himself with the lamb or with the bullock; and when the animal was slain, it was as though he, the worshiper, had been slain. It was a substitutionary sacrifice. That is the gospel. There is in Christ an actual substitution. This is not a metaphor or simile. This is not poetry or fiction. This is not imagination. This is an actual substitution. God took Christ, His only begotten Son, and delivered Him to the judgment and death, to the damnation and cursing assigned to us. Christ received in His own body the curse and the judgment. He died in our stead. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us ... that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” [Galatians 3:13-14]; “that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” [1 Corinthians 5:21]. That is, He actually took our place: the law fully satisfied, judgment for judgment, blood for blood, damnation for damnation. All of it did He take, bearing in His own body our sins on the tree [1 Peter 2:24]. Pastor Criswell Hebrews 9:22 (NIV) 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. But now, praise God: Matthew 26:28 (NIV) 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
