There is no doubt that Christmas carols have catchy tunes and conjure up strong emotional feelings from our childhood, but I sometimes question the Biblical veracity of the lyrics of these songs.  For example, the Bible indicates that Jesus was born, not in late December when the hills around Bethlehem are usually cold and rainy, but earlier in the fall when the nights are warmer.  Luke assures the Bible writer that at the time of Jesus’ birth there were shepherds with their flocks in the fields around Bethlehem. This could not have been late, wintry December.  So when Christmas carols move the time period of Jesus’ birth inaccurately to winter, does this create a problem for the Christian who desires to serve God with spirit and truth (John 4:24)?

Many other examples could be proffered, but even if we are all moved by the glorious harmonies and delightful melodies of Christmas carol, we should not ignore that many of these lyrics promote a false narrative around the birth of Jesus.

No one knows the actual day Christ was born .   The problem is not in that .  Its the pagan things we want kept out of Christmas .

But to celebrate a day and songs about HIS BIRTH is not evil .   Evil is evil , when they put the pagan stuff in Christmas or the covetous stuff ,  THAT is evil .

But to sing songs about His birth ,   THAT is a joy and we do it to HONOR HIM .

And now let all bring wonderful good songs that HONOR our LORD .

We sing about the day of His birth , we celebrate His life and all HIS sayings ,  His death we honor by communion and His resurrection we rejoice in too .

Now hands up one and hands up all .    Cause me thinks , ITS HIGH TIME TO PRAISE THE LORD .

Perhaps i'm also being a damper here, but i'm a bit of a Scrooge. It's not so much the holiday itself, more just the people. I rather don't enjoy the "Santa" songs or ones which seem to center around the commercialism of Christmas. They start up their nonsense right after Halloween is finished (or well enough beforehand) and folks can get downright tiresome with their... Zeal. As if driving in winter isn't troublesome enough, one has to deal with overenthusiastic people and hearing Christmas music everywhere. At least the snow looks pretty, I guess. Only thing I like about this time of year.

If I had to choose a favorite, I choose We Three Kings. I can't really answer as to why. Though, I suppose it's not one the stores blare too often. That fact probably helps.

Silent Night is my favorite, followed closely by Oh Come Let Us Adore Him.

There is nothing quite like sitting outside early Christmas morning (I'm talking 4 AM early) with some coffee and just enjoying the silence. It's a different kind of silent than other mornings, almost like, the earth is taking a moment too. So I often find myself singing that little tune as I sit and ponder Him on those early mornings and enjoy the special silent night. If one is to ponder Him then they'll definitely adore Him so that's why Silent Night is followed by the other song. :)

I don't know if everyone considers it a Christmas Caroll, but my most favorite song concerning the baby Jesus is "Mary Did You Know".

Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you

Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God

Mary did you know, Mary did you know, Mary did you know

The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I am

Mary did you know, Mary did you know, Mary did you know

Hmmm...is this the other song, @TheAimes?

O Holy Night

O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine o night
O night divine

That's all I could find of it but I've heard that one many times.

That's a good one too!! I think I'm realizing I like way too many Christmas songs. :D

I am posting this in memory of my beloved mother.:emot-heartbeat:

She went to be with Jesus on Feb 27th of this year.

"Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem" was her favorite Christmas carol. :) I like this song because of that.

But I also like how the gospel is tucked into the lyrics.

I underlined the words I am referring to.

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today

We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel
