I attempted to copy/paste from today's Jerusalem Post, but found it impossible. Times Of Israel, the same. So I had to choose the alternate source of Al Arabiya. Right, not exactly our friends. Any thoughts of expected retaliation?

Iran supreme leader vows ‘severe revenge’ for Soleimani killing

Iranian Supreme leader Ali Khamenei said the assassination of Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Qassem Soleimani would double the motivation of the resistance against the United States and Israel,  state television reported.

“All Enemies should know that the jihad of resistance will continue with a doubled motivation, and a definite victory awaits the fighters in the holy war,” Khamenei said in a statement carried by TV, in which he called for three days of national mourning.

Khamenei also vowed “severe revenge” and that Soleimani’s work will continue on.

“Martyrdom was the reward for his ceaseless efforts in all these years,” Khamenei said on his Farsi-language Twitter account in reference to Soleimani, also declaring three days of mourning.

“With him gone, God willing, his work and his path will not be stopped, but severe revenge awaits the criminals who bloodied their foul hands with his blood and other martyrs’ in last night’s incident.”

Iran often refers to regional countries and forces opposed to Israel and the United States as a "resistance" front.

US assassinates Qasem Soleimani, Iran's Khamenei warns of 'harsh revenge'

"The American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qasem Soleimani," said Iraqi PMF spokesman Ahmed al-Assadi.

IRGC Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, along with at least 10 other people, were killed in an attack by US forces in Baghdad on Friday morning Israel time, according to reports confirmed by the Pentagon and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC).

In a statement, the Pentagon said that the US killed Soleimani and al-Muhandis in an airstrike inside Baghdad International Airport.

"At the direction of the President, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a US-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization," the Pentagon's statement read.

According to the Pentagon, Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.

"General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more," the Pentagon claimed, noting that the Iranian leader had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months, "including the attack on December 27th, cculminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel.

"General Soleimani also approved the attacks on the US Embassy in Baghdad that took place this week," the Pentagon added, clarifying that the strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.

The US embassy in Baghdad urged American citizens to leave Iraq immediately. Dozens of foreign oil company employees with US citizenship in Iraq headed to Basra Airport for evacuation, Reuters reported.

The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces spokesperson claimed that Israel was also behind the attack, though Israel has made no such statement.

Following Soleimani's death, the IRGC called called him a martyr: "Honored supreme commander of Islam Soleimani was martyred," read the statement.

Shi'ite Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) described the attack on its Facebook page as "cowardly US bombing."

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Friday that a harsh revenge awaits the "criminals" who killed Soleimani and that the attack will double the motivation of the resistance against the US and Israel.

Khamenei called for three days of mourning in Iran for Soleimani.

The Supreme Leader took part in a meeting of Iran's National Security Council for the first time since becoming Supreme Leader, according to Al Manar.

Khamenei appointed Soleimani's deputy, Brigadier General Esmail Ghaani, to replace him as head of the country's Quds Forces, Iranian media reported.

The force's programme "will be unchanged from the time of his predecessor," Khamenei said in a statement published by state media,

Former IRGC chief Mohsen Rezaee tweeted in response to the attack that "vigorous revenge against America" will be pursued following the death of Suleimani.

"The Revolutionary Guards, the wise Iranian nation and the resistance front across the geographical expanse of the Muslim nation will avenge the blood of this martyr (Soleimani)," warned IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif. "The joy of the Zionists and Americans will in no time turn into mourning."

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday the assassination was, "an extremely dangerous and foolish escalation... The U.S. bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism," he said in a post on Twitter.

Zarif later said that the killing of Soleimani will only strengthen the resistance in the region, according to Iranian State TV.

Supporters of Iranian-backed Iraqi paramilitary groups stormed the US Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday following US air raids on Sunday against Kataib Hezbollah militia bases in retaliation for missile attacks that killed a US contractor in northern Iraq last week.

Tension between the United States and Iran has ramped up in the region over US economic sanctions hurting the Iranian economy. The two sides have traded blame over attacks on oil installations, militia arms depots as well as military bases hosting US forces.

Reports that Lebanese Hezbollah deputy leader Naem Qasm was among those killed were unconfirmed Friday morning. His death was denied by a media outlet affiliated with the group, but an Iranian official told Al Jazeera that Syrian and Lebanese citizens had also been killed in the attack.

Soleimani, who has led the foreign arm of the Revolutionary Guards and has had a key role in fighting in Syria and Iraq, acquired celebrity status at home and abroad.

He was instrumental in the spread of Iranian influence in the Middle East, which the United States and Tehran's regional foes Saudi Arabia and Israel have struggled to keep in check.

He survived several assassination attempts against him by Western, Israeli and Arab agencies over the past two decades.

Soleimani's Quds Force, tasked with carrying out operations beyond Iran's borders, shored up support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad when he looked close to defeat in the civil war raging since 2011 and also helped militiamen defeat Islamic State in Iraq.

Soleimani became head of the Quds Force in 1998, a position in which he kept a low profile for years while he strengthened Iran's ties with Hezbollah in Lebanon, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government and Shi’ite militia groups in Iraq.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted a video of Iraqi citizens celebrating Soleimani's death by dancing in the streets.

Thanks for this, brother. I'm rather new at copy/paste tactics and some sites seem resistant. I tried to copy a pic from National Geographic yesterday. It gave me notification of copyright status and then blocked all attempts to do so.

It's really awful how mixed up they are in their minds.   That leader was planning attacks on our people in Iraq so the President did what he deemed best.

One problem i have with all of  this, and so much more involving our foreign policy,  is  how  we seem to be constrained to examining the  "last event" in isolation.  I have no  doubt Soleimani personally plotted operations that cost many American lives, and no doubt he was plotting more.  That was his job.  But  until we take into  account a lot of history that led to the  current situation, and particularly deal with "Why are we there in the first  place??"....  we're easily  led to adopt simple, jingoistic answers, which  simply allows those currently in the process of destroying the nation we say we love, to continue what they're doing ....with  our support.

Bro, I did not make this quote. You are getting this from the posted article and not me. I merely submitted it without making an opinion on it. It simply is as it is. By the way, this came from the Iranian press if you'll notice.

I am responding to the quote. As you say, it is what it is.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, but don't give up the land to get it.

No, bro. I did NOT say this = BeauJangles said: double the motivation When using this feature, it means I made this statement and/or comment. And I didn't. It's a misquote. Surely you're aware of that, and yes of course I pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
