Wasn't Babylon (in Iraq) supposed to be uninhabited for all time?

Jeremiah 51:61, 62:  ". . .As soon as you come to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud, and say, ‘You, Lord, have promised concerning this place to cut it off, so that there will be nothing living in it, whether man or animal; but it will be a permanent desolation.’"  Some say that this prophecy has been fulfilled for centuries and continues to be even down to our day.  Yet, others say that Babylon will be re-inhabited in the future and then it will be destroyed forever.

I have always thought that Babylon was uninhabited for centuries.  However, I did some research lately and here's what I found:

  • Babylon was used as a 370-acre military base by U.S. troops during the invasion of Iraq and it was later used by the Polish army from 2003 until 2005.
  • In 2019, UNESCO listed Babylon as a world heritage site so it most likely receives visitors daily.
  • In the 19th century, Benjamin Wills Newton said:  "In the midst of these ruins (of Babylon), too, we find date trees, gardens, and an inhabited village. How, then, can the final desolation which Scripture predicts have fallen upon Babylon?  It is not yet, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.  Not only do the Arabians still pitch tent there, but villages and groves, and a city, exist amidst its ruins."
  • In 1978 Mrs. L. Glynne Dairos, Assistant Secretary of the British School of Archaeology in Iraq, sent a correspondence as to whether any modern villages within the walls of the ancient city existed. She wrote, "There are three modem settlements situated inside the walls of ancient Babylon. The government of Iraq does indeed plan to restore much of Babylon. . ."
  • In the following video of a CNN report, beginning from start time 3.38 until 4.00, it is mentioned that villagers are encroaching upon ancient Babylonian temple ruins:   CNN Bringing Babylon from the Dead

Furthermore, many scriptures seem to point to Babylon suffering a complete and sudden destruction, something that has never happened before in history since Babylon has gradually declined over the centuries.  Thus, many believe that Babylon must once again become a powerful city in the future and then be destroyed for the prophecies to be fulfilled.  What's your opinion?

Hi Biblereader,

I agree fully with what you say. God`s word is very accurate and Babylon is rising as a major historical tourist venue. After the Russian Federation & Iran get their armies wiped out soon, then there will be peace in that region. The Shi-ites will no longer be in charge and the Sunni arm of Islam will rise behind their leader.

I believe some one like Ali-Hatem who is a royal person of the Anbar region which includes the city of Babylon in its area, will leader his people to become the most terrifying force this world has ever seen. At first though he will come in quietly and with deception. Later he will gain ultimate control of the world`s premier forum, (G 20) and take over the financial infrastructure of the world, through the IMF.

Daniel rcvd the vision of the four beast, these are the beast that harm the Hebrew till the end of times, they are the Babylon, Medo Persian, Greece n Rome.

The era of Babylon is over, Sadam who tried to revive it was killed brutally. The end times beast will come from the same 4th beast of Rome reinstituted.

There will be no more Babylon but a village selling souvenirs awaiting tourists to visit renovated history.

May I suggest you get your head out of the past & actually see what is taking place today.

The UN & USA are pouring mega dollars into rebuilding the city of Babylon, and have been doing this for years. And note there is even a University of Babylon, so things are moving along quickly.

This is the Ishar gate, the entrance to the old Babylon area. That was taken years ago when troops were stationed nearby. Lot more has been done since.

Do you have evidence that USA tax dollars are going to rebuilding Babylon.

Good evening all,

All the gentile nations [times of the Gentiles] and 'the mystery' of Babylon started at the tower of Babel with Nimrod, and the dispersion of the 70 Gentile nations the Lord temporarily abandoned. Babylon's influence and heathen, pagan and idolatrous traditions and practices, that continued and filtered down through the nations and centuries; Media-Persia; Greece; Rome; the political - religious RCC unto today. The Book of Revelation also addresses literal Babylon's fate.

Isaiah 13:19 (KJV) And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. 20. It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. [emphasis added]

Obviously, Isaiah's prophecy has not yet been fulfilled, but will be during the tribulation. Based on this description, and the one in Revelation where the ships and people are standing afar off from the smoke [and no doubt upwind], I can't think of a better explanation than radiation from a nuclear weapon.

For many geopolitical and expansion reasons, I suspect the United Nations will move out of New York to literal Babylon sometime in the not to distant future. This is but speculation as I view how, what and where things are shaping up.

This gets a little confusing Marilyn? With what materials did they rebuild the Ishtar gate at the Pergamon Museum, in Berlin, Germany in the early 1900's? Which one is the literal materials, in Iraq, or Berlin? Better question yet, why would they want "The Seat of Satan" there to begin with?

Hi Dennis,

The `Seat of Satan,` is the world`s system under his sway. (1 John 5: 19)

As to Babylon being rebuilt, you may like to look at many of the videos on utube - eg. The End Times is here, by J. Parr.  (2012)
