Calling on the Lord's Name, and I mean His New Testament name, Jesus, brings Him into the situation. The caller has indicated his dependence. The Lord may do as He wishes, but the caller has made Him the source and supply. I try to call earlier rather than later. I have had good experience with calling on His Name.

My wife had a serious car wreck in some road works. The car landed on its roof still sliding and the windscreen exploded. Her long hair was caught between the road and the upside-down car. As the car slid, her head was drawn under the roof by her hair. She screamed "Lord Jesus!" and the car stopped with about an inch to go for her head to be crushed. The rescue services had to cut her hair to get her out of the car. That was over 50 years ago. Calling on His Name can be very practical. I suggest that we make it our habit.

Psalm 116

I love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

The pains of death surrounded me,
And the pangs of Sheol [c]laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your rest, O my soul,
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

 For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.
I will walk before the Lord
In the land of the living.
I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
I said in my haste,
“All men are liars.”

What shall I render to the Lord
For all His benefits toward me?
I will take up the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the Lord.
 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people.

Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His saints.

O Lord, truly I am Your servant;
I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant;
You have loosed my bonds.
 I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.

 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people,
 In the courts of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!

Upon being turned about by God, through His grace alone, there is encouragement, command, and  inclination to publicly praise God, calling upon his name in praise, in public,  in corporate worship. CAlling upon God, by name is friendship a personal relationship with God that is expressed publicly, as friends do.

Thank you - I was actually looking for verses where David called on His name!

I mentioned this testimony of calling on his name in another thread - I used to have reoccurring nightmares where something evil was coming after me and really terrified me to the core.  But I remembered one time to call on his name.  So in my nightmare, as this thing was about to get me, I said, "Lord Jesus!  Lord Jesus!" And immediately it was gone and I woke up knowing the Lord had saved me!

Those particular reoccurring nightmares never came back!  And now I know that if something is threatening me in my dreams (or when I'm awake), all I have to do is call, "Lord Jesus" and they immediately flee.  So the enemy knows this name too, and now usually doesn't bother my dreams much - only very infrequently and then I remind him of the power in that glorious name . . . I know all I have to do is call upon the name of the Lord Jesus and He helps me!* :hurrah:

* this "help" can be in various ways, but mainly His presence becomes clearer, which is always reassuring

Here's a wonderful little song we sing, that came to me as I was considering this topic:

How we love the glorious name,
  The name of Jesus!
’Tis the name above all names—
  On earth or in heav’n.
As we breathe this precious name,
  Darkness and death cannot remain;
For we call and get the Person of that name!

Dear Lord Jesus, with our tongues—
  We gladly confess Thy name,
To the glory of the Father God above.
  For to us to speak Thy praise,
Is the enjoyment of our days;
  Calling JESUS is to call the One we love!

The term "calling on the Lord" means "worship."

And in order to worship one must be saved and in relationship with God.

It doesn't mean what it seems to read, that one can "call" on the Lord and He comes.

Please support your contention with scripture.

"Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved."  Romans 10:13  Therefore, when someone calls on the name of the Lord Jesus, who does that one get?

"Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved."  Romans 10:13  Therefore, when someone calls on the name of the Lord Jesus, who does that one get?

First, Saul is writing to Jewish Christians at Rome.

Second, although it appears to say that "calling on the Lord" means like I would "call on Tony at the barber shop" it doesn't mean that.

Since, Saul is writing to Jewish Christians who have been born again and saved and filled with the Holy Spirit as per the New Covenant God made with the House of Israel, Israel is already in covenant with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and for them "calling upon the Lord" is taken in context to this truth. They are already in covenant relationship with God.

The Scripture is clear that no man (or woman) has the capacity let alone the will to call upon the Lord whom they hate.

The whole letter addresses Israel's history, their Law, their prophets, their Scripture (Saul is quoting from the First Covenant Scriptures), their religion, their culture, their covenants - Abrahamic/Mosaic/Davidic - covenants, their rituals and practices, the New Covenant, etc. These are things that Gentiles would know nothing about being carried away with their dumb idols. Saul also says:

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. Rom. 3:11.

Jesus Christ Himself echoes this truth:

19 And this is the condemnation, that light [CHRIST] is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light [CHRIST], because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light [CHRIST], neither cometh to the light [CHRIST], lest his deeds should be reproved.

Jn. 3:19–20.

Humankind is bound in sin. They are servants of sin. They hate Christ neither come to Christ nor do the call upon Him. They love their darkness.

Thus, in Romans 10 Saul is writing to a people in covenant with God and "call upon their Lord" is another way of saying "worship."

Saul quotes from the First Covenant to Jews who have been saved and know their Scripture. They know the Abrahamic Covenant and the Mosaic Covenant, and everything else Sail writes about in his letter to Rome.

Years ago I was leaving work.   It was that time of year when it was already dark.

A young guy headed straight towards me.   Acting like he had a gun or knife in his jacket pocket, he aimed it into my ribs.

Deep from within me, suddenly, I called out "In Jesus' name!"

The guy's mouth dropped open, he looked stunned.   Then he started to apologize to me and say he was sorry.   As I hurriedly told him where to get some Christian help for young men, he thanked me and ran away.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
