Guest shiloh357
US chooses to be ally over 'honest broker' Congress continues to express unwavering support By Ryan Jones July 26, 2006 The United States has chosen to play the role of supportive ally rather than "honest peace broker" as Israel battles its Islamic foes in Lebanon, and nowhere has that support been stronger than in Congress. Last week the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution that expressed unwavering support for Israel's military actions against Hizb'allah. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers rejected calls to include speech urging Israel to practice restraint. Congressman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY) summed up the sentiment shared by most representatives in comments carried by The Washington Post: "I don't want to be an honest broker. I want to be a friend and ally of the only democratic government in the Middle East that is besieged by its enemies." House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) blasted attempts by the international community and mainstream media to draw moral equivalency between Israel and its enemies: "Are there going to be civilian casualties? Yes. Are [the Israelis] doing their best to minimize those? Yes. But to put a terrorist organization on the same level as the Israeli government, I think, is unwise and unfair." The Bush administration has likewise placed all of the blame for the current crisis on Hizb'allah and its sponsors in Syria and Iran, and is holding back global efforts to impose an immediate ceasefire in order to give Israel time to deal decisively with the Lebanese terror group. If we sought after a cease fire it would undermind and contradict everything we have done in Iraq and Aganastan.
