I don't get it.

I shouldn't be listening to music by secular artists?

Heck, it's good music!

Seeing as music is created to glorify God only, then secular music is against God. Worshiping God is what it is for.

That's like saying using your mouth for anything but praying is against God. I don't think God wants us to be oppressed in His name. I believe it is ludicrous to think that songs like Oh Suzanna are evil simply because they are not directly about God. If we marvel at a sunset, are we robbing God of His glory for saying "Oh, what a beautiful sunset"

Stephen Collins Foster wrote "Oh Susanna" in the mid 1800's. He also wrote notably un-christian songs such as "Open your Lattice my Love."

Trivia bonus: A couple of lines of Oh Susanna have been changed or removed since Mr Foster died. The original lines "And killed 500 niggers" and "Dis Darkie will surely die" were removed.

While I'm not sure that songs from the 1800's are fair game in this convo...it sure was nice of you to throw in ANOTHER good example of secular music.

Not oppression...not looking-the-other-way acceptance...transformation. Pure and simple. If there's such a division between "Christian" and "secular" music than we all might as well stop using these Boards, and the Internet, for that matter...after all, the "original" Internet was intended for military purposes and invented by a non-Christian...so there's no way (s)he had the intention of glorifying God by its invention; therefore, we'd better stop all this technilogical nonsense. Our only focus should be to evangelize the lost and to edify the saved, each of us using our God-given talents and abilities for His glory. It's as simple as that...

Alrighty guys...

Maybe I misrepresented my views. I'm not sure what happened, but I am not actually disagreeing with alot of what you guys say. Sure, I disagree somewhat, but thats just normal. Vickilynn I find myself agreeing with you ALOT...you seem to have it right, and I can't really argue with what you are saying.

Since the onset of this discussion my ONLY intent was to encourage people to support Christian music MORE. I wish Christians would not buy secular music, and instead buy Christian. Now in trying to make my point, I gave several examples, which I admitted made me sound a bit legalistic. I am not trying to be a legalistic, stuck-in-the-mud kinda guy. I just want people to be aware of what they are supporting and maybe inspire a change of heart in regards to Christian music.

Why do percieve that a change of perception is needed? Good question. What really got me going on this was the two links at the top of this thread. The persons involved had some VERY negative words about Christian music (and some people I know and have met, and have worked with.) This bothered me. Compounded with some of the discussions in this thread about secular music, I just wanted to put a positive spin on the Christian industry vs. secular. I stand by my claim that there are NO secular artists out there that accurately represent what we as Christians should look for in our entertainment choices. But I have said again, and again, and again, that those are personal choices between you and God. I am okay with that.

Cobalt...it was not my intention to try and pass judgement on you, or anyone. If it came across that way, I apologize. If you listen to Christian music 80% of the time, that is awesome. Thats all I I've been trying to say. Support fellow believers more than secular artists. I listened to secular artists for many years...even when I worked in Christian music. There just came a time for me when I noticed a disparity amongst Christians concerning secualr artists, and it bothered me. In my life, I am very extreme. Its either hot or cold. Yes or no. On or Off. Its almost like a competitive thing in me. But thats just me, and I accept that not everyone is like that. I will always try and persuade Christians to be 100% against non-christian artists...and support Christian music. What you do is up to you.

Vickilynn...Should my family ever be honored enough to meet you and your family...you can leave the music on. I am not that bad :noidea:

Shalom Axxman,

What a gracious post!

The funny thing is, I agree with ALOT of what you're saying as well and I understand where you're coming from.

And, if you and your family ever came to visit us, you would be most welcomed and we would do everything to make you all comfortable, including not causing you any offense by what we listen to.

I believe these things are so inconsequential in the light of eternity and the Kingdom and should never be a place of division.

I listen to secular music not any of the harsh stuff. Never have liked it. Plus it depends on the music and lyrics as to why I like it. Mostly anymore though I do listen to Christian music. No in the small podunk town that I live in there is no way to just get everything Christian nor would I want to. It shuns people away from the truth. I've planted seeds along the way just by asking simple questions and getting people to think. That's just my 2 cents worth.

What makes one piece of music sacred and another piece secular?

I was looking through this website about rock music and it's (often) satanic influences. Now, I like music as much as the next person, and I like some of the artists shown on this site, but things like this teach us to at least aware of what we are listening to sometimes. Is anyone else aware of these things?

Any comments?

*edit*

See also a portion of the video 'They sold their soul for rock and roll' here

The full version is about 10 hours long. This part deals with the allegiance to Aleister Crowley by many mainstream musicians.

And this following part deals with lots of popular musicians today. To see this clip, you have to click on the link on the right hand side of the page entitled '28 minute preview':

Very much aware.

Even the OT teaches us that people have an easier time remembering something when the idea it put to a song.

Rock music like this can also trigger PTSD if someone constantly plays music that triggers an area in your life where this type of music/theme was present.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
