Pilate was a real governor. Some believed he was a mythical character.

4) Is their extra biblical evidence of the direct disciples persecution? And is their anyway to verify that they weren't lying, other than assuming they weren't?

From the perspective of historical criticism, this concern fails to take something very key into account, namely that the Bible was not penned by a single human author.

Just because the works have been compiled, doesn't make it a single source.

The four gospels were penned by four different witnesses at different times.

The letters of Paul, the once persecutor then convert, were totally independent.

James, Jesus' once doubting brother, wrote a corroborating letter.

Jude wrote one.

Peter wrote two.

John wrote not only the gospel but letters and Revelation.

These are, in no uncertain terms, independent sources.

Just because we complied them into a single text doesn’t make them any less so.

These are independent, corroborating accounts, and just because they’re in agreement doesn’t make them biased witnesses. Historically, if all accounts are in agreement, it’s actually support of the case for historical accuracy.

Atheists often argue that if there is a God, then He is obligated to provide undeniable evidence of His existence.

Well, if the evidence wasn’t good enough to convince the witnesses of the events (the authors of the Biblical texts), then it would have failed to meet the criteria put forth by the atheists, so it only stands to reason that if it's true and the evidence is good then witnesses would agree (just as the atheists demand), and the record of good evidence doesn’t become bad evidence as time elapses.

Regarding the supposition that they could be lying, if they were lying it would have been easy enough for someone to write something that discounted the accounts they were spreading (e.g. I was there and it didn't go down that way), since the topics related to the regions in which the events recorded in the Bible occurred, within the lifetime of adversaries of the accounts.

No such evidence to the contrary exist.

Simply put, there is absolutely no historical evidence to support skepticism of the historical accuracy of the New Testament accounts.

Dr. Hugh Ross August 22, 2003

Unique among all books ever written, the Bible accurately foretells specific events in detail many years, sometimes centuries, before they occur. Approximately 2500 prophecies appear in the pages of the Bible,

about 2000 of which already have been fulfilled to the letter-no errors.

The remaining 500 or so reach into the future and may be seen

unfolding as days go by.

Since the probability for any one of these prophecies having been fulfilled by chance averages less than one in ten (figured very conservatively) and since the prophecies are for the most part independent of one another, the odds for all these prophecies having been fulfilled by chance without error is less than one in 102000 (that is 1 with 2000 zeros written after it).

.... 3) This is circular reasoning. You are using the bible to prove the bible.....

History Proves The Bible

Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children. Isaiah 66:8

Reasoning Proves The Bible

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18

And The Tasting Proves The Bible

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalms 34:8

Even Man's Hatred Of Jesus Proves The Bible

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death. Proverbs 8:36

So What Are You Waiting For

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Eat Beloved

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Luke 4:4

Eat

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Love, Joe
