Lan is expected to strengthen significantly this week while tracking northward over the open waters of the western Pacific Ocean. This track over very warm water with low wind shear will allow the cyclone to become a typhoon with an intensity equal to that of a major hurricane in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific oceans. There is a chance for Lan to become a super typhoon between Friday and Sunday as it passes east of Taiwan and Japan’s Ryukyu Islands. A super typhoon contains sustained winds of at least 241 km/h (150 mph) and is the equivalent of a strong Category 4 or 5 hurricane.
