I don't know if anyone's read the Sinclair Lewis novel It Can't Happen Here, but...

Here and there, I've heard people showing alarm at the direction America's headed. A Google search for "totalitarian America" will show what I mean. The political left, who seem to be socialist-minded and unabashedly hate their country, dominate education, the media and now Washington--at least that's what I keep hearing. Yes, it's hearsay, but still...

I tend to think it couldn't happen because of the safeguards built into our government by the Founding Fathers, the separation of powers between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches. The left has triumphed in the past as well, particularly in 1992 when Clinton swept into the Presidency. I remember well how the evangelical community reacted to that ("America isn't going down the tubes, America is down the tubes" one pastor asserted). But the next election always lies ahead, as 1994 showed. I guess we would have to have a one-party system and no more elections. Or get to the point where elections are so fixed, with no one able to do anything about it, that they become just a formality with one party always winning.

What does everyone think? Am I worrying too much, or am I just being naive in believing the United States couldn't possibly devolve into another Soviet Union?

Thanks in advance.
