Revelation - SIXTH SEAL

Sixth Seal

This sounds like the whole universe will be shaken. As some speculate, this is not the wrath of Satan or man; it is God doing the shaking. The earth dwellers know precisely where these judgments are proceeding from, Jesus:

And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: (Revelation 6:16)

The lie and myth of man-made climate change is finally exposed for what it is; everything now is outside the scope of man. God is in control.

The seven-year Tribulation does not start at the sixth seal, nor does the harpazo happen here, contrary to some theology. The wrath of the Lamb began with the 1st Seal. These earth-dwellers have finally admitted and recognized all this is the wrath of the Lamb. These things are outside of the scope of man, and they have to admit that. They finally get it!

God has used humanity to inflict judgment, but they can no longer pin the tail on man made anymore, it is divine in nature. A loaf of bread for a day's wage, there will not be any football Super Bowl, NBA championships, backyard barbeques, or baseball World Series anymore.1

The Sixth Seal

The sixth seal contains terrible convulsions that will shake the earth and affect the sun, moon, and stars. A meteor shower will bring destruction, and the earth’s crust will shift. This is not a localized natural disaster but worldwide terror. It will be so terrible that everyone—including the mighty—will realize that these events are “acts of God” in the most horrifyingly real sense of the term. They realize that this is judgment, and that the end cannot be far off. In some respects this is similar to the description of the Battle of Armageddon (16:12–21), of which it may be a preliminary hint.

Jesus used similar language when He spoke of the time of His coming again (Matthew 24:29–30; Luke 21:26). So had Isaiah, in predicting the fall of Babylon (Isaiah 13:10) and Ezekiel in predicting the fall of Egypt (Ezekiel 32:7). Similar language appears also in Isaiah 34:4; Joel 2:30–31; Acts 2:20, where it appears to refer to God’s judgments on the nations, or the final Day of Judgment.

Matthew 24:29: “The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.”1

The sixth seal anticipates cosmic upheaval. Exhaustive metaphors describe the disturbance of the heavenly bodies (vv. 12–14). The rebels of the earth, small and great, would be terrified by these events, which the prophets foretold (v. 15; see Is 2:19–21; Jl 2:30–31). There would be nowhere to hide from the righteous Father and the wrathful Lamb. The prayers of the martyrs would indeed be answered. Pre-wrath rapture proponents find the rapture here, just before the manifestation of God’s wrath in 6:17. This is unlikely for a number of reasons: (1) The church is said to be altogether exempt from the time period (see the comments on 3:10). (2) A fine distinction between the impact of God in the earlier and later seals cannot be sustained since Christ is the author of all of them (6:1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12). The whole period is a period of God’s wrath. (3) It is very unlikely that the broad language of v. 15 allows for the exclusion of all believers. (4) The chronology of the seal judgments appears to place them in the first half of the tribulation, thus indicating that the entire tribulation contains God’s wrath, not simply the latter portions of it as required by the midtribulational, pre-wrath, and posttribulational approaches. While John often emphasized love in his writings, he did not hesitate to mention the severity of God toward the rebellious. Many modern believers should develop a more balanced view of their Lord.11 Green, D. D. (2014). Revelation. In M. A. Rydelnik & M. Vanlaningham (Eds.), The moody bible commentary (p. 2010). Moody Publishers.

As the sixth seal opened, John recorded that a great earthquake occurred. More dramatic than the earthquake was the transformation of the heavens with the sun turning black, the moon turning blood red, and stars falling like late figs from a fig tree. The heavens appeared like a scroll being rolled up. At the same time, due to the earthquake, all the mountains and islands were moved from their places. Here again in the sequence of events, the end had not been reached as there was still another seal. But this was the most dramatic judgment thus far in this time of great distress before the Second Coming.

Many expositors have attempted to see a figurative fulfillment to this prophecy. It is preferable, however, to take this prediction literally. The trumpet and bowl judgments, to be revealed later in Revelation, also include great disturbances in the heavens and on the earth before Christ’s second coming.

6:15–17. The practical effect of the judgment was fear in unbelievers from all walks of life. They called on the mountains and the rocks to fall on them and to hide them from God’s wrath. Their fear was so great they would rather be killed by a falling mountain than to face the wrath of the Lamb and Their wrath, referring to the anger of the Triune God. Again this is not a picture of ordinary trouble but the period of greatest distress in world history.

Chapter 6 is one of the most important and pivotal chapters in the entire book. It describes the first six seals and also introduces the seventh seal which consists of and introduces the seven trumpets and the seven bowls of the wrath of God in chapters 8–9; 16.

The contents of chapter 6 should put to rest the false teachings that God, being a God of love, could not judge a wicked world. It also raises the important question contained in the closing words of verse 17: Who can stand? Only those who have availed themselves of the grace of God before the time of judgment will be able to stand when God deals with the earth in this final period of great distress. Those who will be saved in the Great Tribulation are described in the next chapter.1
