The Kingdoms of Solomon and Jesus Christ

When Prince Solomon was made King of Israel in 1031 BC, and began to sit on the royal throne in Jerusalem, it was a type and foreshadowing of the accession of Jesus Christ over the “Kingdom of this World.”  Revelation 11:15
      One of Christ's titles is “Prince of Peace.”   Isaiah 9:6  Solomon's name came from the Hebrew word for peace, Shalom: therefore Solomon was also literally Prince [of] Peace, and a type of the Messiah/Christ.  1 Chronicles 22:9
    God clearly revealed this relationship between the two men by promises he made to David about his son Solomon. These promises apply equally to Jesus:

I will set up your seed after you, who will be of your sons [both Solomon and Jesus were physical descendants of David]; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son...  1 Chronicles 17:11-13

Just prior to and soon after Solomon came to the throne, a series of troubles took place in Israel. Like so many other Old Testament events, these also were “a shadow of...things to come”: they allegorically portray the period leading up to and soon following the accession of Jesus Christ to his Kingdom.  Hebrews 10:1  These Latter Day events are extensively described in the Book of Revelation, and to a lesser degree in Matthew 24 and elsewhere

Here, then, are the primary events and main players of the End Times, as foretold in the life of Solomon.

The Great Tribulation of the End Times and the Seals of Revelation 6

And Satan stood up against Israel...”  1 Chr. 21:1
'And the Dragon (Satan) stood before the Woman (Church)...'  Rev. 12:4

A period of tribulation began in Solomon's day, near the very end of his father David's rule. The troubles began when King David was moved to number all of his warriors throughout the tribes of Israel and Judah. David's motive for this act is unclear; however, pride of power and/or preparation for war are standard reasons to call for the mustering of one's forces.  2 Samuel 24:1-9; 1 Chr. 21:1-5

David's action foreshadowed the opening of the 1st Seal of Revelation 6:1-2:

     ...behold, a white horse...went forth overcoming, and to overcome.

Jesus prophesied about this in Matthew 24:3-5, concerning 'signs of the end of the age':

     For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ [Anointed One],” and will deceive many.

In sum: prideful men will mobilize their forces to impose their self-exaltation over others. [Note: Many such egoic national leaders are currently centralizing their power. However, Jesus has not yet opened the Seal that will release them to go forth in great conquests.]

*           *          *

Because of David's prideful mustering of his troops, the LORD decreed a punishment. He gave David a choice of “famine...the sword...or...plague.”  1 Chr. 21:10-12; 2 Sam. 24:11-13
    In the Latter Days, there will be no choice: sword/”wars”; famine/ "a quart of wheat for a day's wages"; and pestilences”/ “death” result from the opening of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Seals of Revelation 6:3-8; also foretold in Matthew 24:6-7. This Divine unleashing of punishments will stem from the arrogant folly of earthly rulers.

*          *          *

David's sin resulted in the deaths of a multitude of innocent Israelites:

seventy thousand...died. ... Then David spoke to the LORD...and said, “Surely I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done?”  2 Sam. 24:15, 17

In the Latter Days, innocents will likewise be killed. 5th Seal:

I saw under the altar the souls of those slain for the Word of God, and for the testimony which they held.  Rev. 6:9
Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake.  Matt. 24:9

*          *          *

After David confessed his sin and responsibility for the deaths, the LORD commanded him to “go up” and build an altar to God on Mount Moriah. The site of the altar was to become that of the altar in the famous Temple built by Solomon in Jerusalem.  2 Sam. 24:18f.; 1 Chr. 21:18f.; 22:1

At that time,

David lifted his eyes and saw the Angel of the LORD standing between Earth and heaven, having in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem.  1 Chr.

21:16

Out of respect and fear, David and his elders “fell on their faces”; others “hid themselves.” However, the LORD “relented of the destruction” and told the angel to desist from inflicting more tribulation: “It is enough, now restrain your hand.”  1 Chr. 21:15-20

Very comparable events will take place in the End Times:

Immediately after the [Great] Tribulation of those days [“for the elect's sake he has shortened the days,” Mark 13:20], the Sun will be darkened, and the Moon will not give its light, [and] the stars will fall from heaven... Matt. 24:29

These same signs are listed in Revelation 6:12-13, and identify this time as the 6th Seal:

...the sun [will] bec[o]me black...the Moon bec[o]me like blood, and the stars f[a]ll...

Rev. 6:15-17 proceeds to describe the great fear of men at that day, who hide themselves” because they see the face of the Lord. Likewise Matthew 24:30:

[T]hen all the tribes of the Earth will mourn; and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with  power and great glory.

The Rapture

Like the Angel of the LORD that men saw and feared and hid from in David's time, Christ will remain “in the clouds,” that is, “between earth and heaven.” David was called to go up” in his day upon Mt. Moriah; the elect of God

shall be caught up...in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air.  1 Thessalonians 4:17

...[and shall] come to Mount Zion...in heaven.  Hebrews 12:22-23

This catching up (harpazo, rapture) of the Latter Day elect was foreshadowed in David's and Solomon's time in another way. The next-mentioned event in 1 Kings says that David's

servants...brought to the king...a virgin.  1:2-3

This act foreshadows Matthew 24:31:

He [the Lord] will send his angels/servants...and they will gather together his elect...

These elect include Matthew 25's spiritual virgins: those who are taken in to the Bridegroom/Jesus at his Coming in the clouds.

*          *          *

Revelation 7:9-17, describing events after the opening of the 6th Seal and before the 7th, tell of this “great multitude” of elect virgins who “come out of the Great Tribulation,”

standing before the throne...of God, [where they] serve him day and night in his Temple.  ...for the Lamb [Christ] who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them...

These Latter Day heavenly events were foreshadowed by the next-mentioned events in 1 Chronicles 22:2f. The chronicler describes how David began to assemble the plans and materials for the fabulous Jerusalem Temple: over a trillion dollars (in today's value) worth of gold and silver, not to mention gemstones, marble slabs, etc. Detailed plans for the Temple and its operation were provided to David by the Holy Spirit.  1 Chr. 28:11-19  The King

gathered together all the leaders of Israel, with the priests and the Levites,

and established them in their orders of service – priestly sacrifice, musicians, gatekeepers, etc. – before the LORD.  1 Chr. 23:2f.

In essence, David planned and provided for the spiritual functions of the Temple. This foreshadowed the gathering to and organization of the service in the heavenly (spiritual) Temple of Rev. 7:9-17, shown above. However, the building of the physical Temple in Jerusalem was to be carried out later by Solomon, as we will see below.

The Era of Revelation's Trumpets and the Beast

At this time in David's and Solomon's era, Solomon the son had not yet become king. The very next event in 1 Kings 1:5 tells how Adonijah, a half-brother of Prince Solomon,

exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.”

Supported by Joab, the commander of the army, and Abiathar, a leading priest, Adonijah gathered those faithful to him – most of Israel's leaders – to proclaim him king. This was in direct defiance of the sitting king, David; his appointed heir, Solomon; Nathan the prophet, Zadok the other leading priest, and “David's mighty men.”  1 Kings 1:8-10

Adonijah's attempt to usurp the kingdom was a foreshadowing of the Latter Day events described in Revelation 13 and most of Daniel 7. A man described as a “little horn” and “a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies” (Dan. 7:8, 25; Rev. 13:5; cf. Ex. 4:16)who is but a puppet-ruler of a demonic spirit called the Beast, the “king [and]...angel of the Abyss/Bottomless Pit” (Rev. 9:11; 11:7; 13:1; 17:3, 8; etc.)begins to

[exalt himself] against God, to blaspheme his name, his tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.  Rev. 13:6; cf. Dan. 7:25

Like Adonijah, this usurper will defy and attempt to overthrow the true King of Heaven, the Father, and his appointed-to-be-king and Son, Jesus Christ. (Like Solomon, not yet ruling.) And, like Adonijah, the Beast will be supported by a renegade leading priest, Satan, and a power-wielding strongman, the False Prophet. The latter will “exercise all the power of the Beast,” requiring all people to worship him.  Rev. 12:9; 13:2, 4, 11f.; 16:13; 19:20

*          *          *

Adonijah's rebellion quickly collapsed after King David commanded Zadok and Nathan to blow the trumpet” and loudly and publicly proclaim Solomon to be King:

the people rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with the sound of them.

The here-to-fore Prince Solomon was thereafter established before all the people as King Solomon.  1 Kings 1:32f.

In the End Times, the Little Horn/Mouth of the Beast will likewise have only a short period of glory: 1260 days = 3½ times = 42 months. At the blowing of the 7th Trumpet, “they shall take away his dominion,” and

great voices in heaven [will proclaim], “The Kingdom of this World has become the Kingdom of Our Lord and His Christ...” [A]nd there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake.   Dan. 7:25-27; Rev. 13:5; 11:15, 19

The here-to-fore Prince of Peace is here established over Earth as the King of Peace.

The Era of Revelation's Bowls and the Judgment of the Beast

The accession of Solomon to the throne muted Adonijah's rebellion for a while, but did not end it. Some time later, the usurper resurfaced, this time attempting to verbally seduce the Queen-Mother, Bathsheba, so as to obtain the virgin (Abishag) earlier taken up to the palace of King David. However, King Solomon quickly intervened and sentenced Adonijah to death. At that time, he also sentenced the military man Joab to death, and banished the rebel priest Abiathar, saying “I will not put you to death at this time.” “Thus the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.”  1 Kings 2:13-46

In the Latter Days, after a period of time that ends with the 6th and 7th Bowls of Revelation 16, the Beast and his allies will again attempt to usurp power. The 'Queen-Mother' of this era is representative of the land and people of Israel (Jerusalem in particular), with whom the LORD anciently entered into a marriage covenant. Jesus Christ, God's Son, was born of this maternal line.  Isaiah 54:5-6; Jeremiah 3; Ezekiel 16; etc.  “The Beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies” will invade and attempt to conquer Israel and Jerusalem. This effort to secure the heart of Christ's earthly kingdom is seemingly meant to precede an assault upon the heavens, wherein dwells the Virgin.  Rev. 19:19; 16:12f.; Zechariah 14; Joel 3; Ezek. 38-39; Is. 14:12-15; etc.

Like Solomon, Christ will quickly intervene and quash the rebellion against his kingdom. The Beast and his enforcer, the False Prophet, will both be

cast...into the lake of fire...[the place of] the second [spiritual] death.  Rev. 19:20; 20:14

Satan, the rebellious former heavenly priest, will be banished to the Abyss. However, he is later to also be sentenced to the second death, fulfilling the foreshadowing of Abiathar 'not being put to death at this time.'  Rev. 20:1-3, 10

The Millennial Temple

The Book of 1 Chronicles skips over the history of events from the virgin being taken up through the death of Adonijah. Instead, it focuses on King David's preparation for building the Jerusalem Temple. As we saw above, David's work was that of spiritual organization, corresponding to the LORD's heavenly Temple of Revelation 7. The elect of the Church are –

living stones...being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  1 Peter 2:5

[Y]ou are...being fitted together...into a holy temple in the Lord...a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.  Eph. 2:19-22

*          *          *

1 Chronicles closes with mention of a day of great celebration wherein all the people “made Solomon son of David king the second time.  29:22  In 2 Chronicles, the next series of events concerns Solomon's preparation for and construction of the physical Temple in Jerusalem.

These events at the time of Solomon's full accession to the throne foreshadow a second celebration of Christ's coming into his Kingdom, after he has completely defeated the Beast and the kings of the earth. Soon thereafter, worship of the LORD will again be established, by the reigning Lord and King Yeshua/Jesus, in a great physical Millennial [1000-year] Temple in Jerusalem:

It shall come to pass that those who are left of all the nations that came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts...  Zech. 14:16

I will make a covenant of peace with them [“the children of Israel”]...and I will set my sanctuary in their midst forever more.  Ezek. 37:26, 21

Now it shall come to pass in the Latter Days, that...[m]any nations will come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house [temple] of the God of Jacob”...[in] Jerusalem. ... Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.  Isaiah 2:2-4; Micah 4:1-3
