  1. Last night at Bible study, a young woman sat next to me and proceeded to play games on her phone during the entire Bible study.  Sometimes people use a Bible app on their phones to look things up.  I was close enough to her to see that wasn't the case, she was playing some kind of game. She even had headphones on, so at least I couldn't hear anything.  Even so, it was very distracting and I struggled to pay attention to the study.  Later, she pulled out a bag of cookies, ate them while playing on her phone, then pulled out a diabetic testing kit and proceeded to test herself all the while playing her game.  I can't imagine why she even came, although at first before the study started, she chatted and seemed excited to be there.  I was hoping the study leader would pull the girl aside and ask her to put her phone away out of respect but it didn't happen.  Should I have said something to her?

    I just don't understand this behavior!  I find it extremely rude.

    Why did she even bother to come if she wasn't going to pay attention?

    Why wouldn't it occur to her that she was distracting others who wished to concentrate on the study?

    Am I wrong or just old fashioned?

    I notice more and more people can't put their phones down, EVER.  I've sat at lunch with someone and watch them ignore me and play on their phones.  I've watched entire families sit at a restaurant and never look at each other or speak to each other because they are on their phones. I've been behind cars that don't go when the light turns green because they are busy on their phones.  There are many other instances of this I've seen, too many to list.

    I can see checking your phone if you are expecting an important message or call, but to not take your eyes off of it at all?   Why would you go out to lunch with someone then not talk to them?  It makes no sense.  When I ask people these questions they either laugh and not answer or call me old.

    Several months ago, I was out to lunch with a friend who is 25 years younger than me.  I asked her to put down her phone and talk to me or I was going to leave.  I asked her as nicely as I could.  She did put it down, however, it was almost laughable what happened.  She became very nervous, and every few minutes she would reach for it then stop herself.  She was very distracted and practically dived for the door after we finished to check her phone.

    Is this some kind of psychological problem or just rude behavior?  Should I just grin and bear it?

  2. I have had similar issues in my family only with my brother.  My older sister would try to shame or guilt me saying I wasn't "Christian" because I distanced myself from him.  I should "forgive" him and accept him as he was.  Well... first of all, forgiving is one thing, but you are not required to stay in a relationship with all that abuse.   Do NOT let them guilt you.  It's a manipulative action used on you to get what they want.  Stand strong.  It's hard I know but in the end your life will be better for it.  God bless you!

  3. Debrakay, how I feel your pain.  I have had the same thing in my life.  It's impossible to have meaningful discussions with these types of people, and what you can safely talk about gets smaller and smaller as the world falls deeper into darkness.  It is truly sad thing, to watch the people you love or have known most of your life fall hook, link and sinker for all the lies.

    I always try to be neutral and never let them bait me, which usually angers them so it's a no win situation. For me, there are some I avoid, because it gives me so much anxiety and grief to be in their presence.

    I made the decision a few years ago to try and not have relationships with these types of people.   They drain my cup dry.

  4. I applaud Tammy for speaking out.  We are to be lights of the world and I believe speaking out against evil is being a light and it's the right thing to do.  We should not refrain from truth.

    However, I do also believe what Marathoner said as well.  We are to love everyone.

    I struggle myself between these two points all the time.   I truly believe our actions speak volumes and if we decide to not do business with someone or a business entity we believe is sinful, then we should not do business with anyone, because there is none righteous.

    By not shunning these things, just maybe, your light will shine forth and break through the darkness.

    It is a hard, HARD thing to do.

  5. A new person was assigned to my department several months ago.  They are smart and capable, however, this person is overzealous and makes themselves available after hours, on weekends, holidays and even when they are taking a vacation or sick day!  This person is not management,  our department is not on call, nor does what we do important enough that it can't wait a day or until Monday.   I learned last week this person got promoted.   I am concerned that this behavior might set new expectations for our department and I don't think it's fair.

    I spoke with my boss about my concerns, and he said I am comparing apples to oranges.  I honestly don't understand what that is supposed to mean.

    I am older and getting close to retirement.  I like my job and enjoy it and I love the company I work for.  Am I over reacting?  Should I just do my job as I have been doing and let the other person burn themselves at both ends?  I have to admit I feel like an under achiever now!

    Am I wrong in letting this bother me?

    Thanks

  6. I wasn't going to get the vaccine, however my Mother is in a nursing home and I haven't been able to see her except thru a window for months now.  They announced in room visits but vaccination was required, so I got it.  However, I didn't read the fine print.. it turns out only the resident had to be vaccinated, not the visitors!  Anyway, I got the J&J one, and I was "sick" for at least 1.5 weeks.  I felt very tired and couldn't get enough sleep.  I was still able to work and it didn't really affect my life except for being dead tired.

    I hadn't planned on getting it as I said earlier.. they whammed it out there way too fast and it's so interlaced with politics who knows what the shot really contains and I am very suspicious.  However, I put it in the Lord's hand so I could visit my Mom, if I had known I didn't need it I wouldn't have gotten it.

  7. I joined because I am HUNGRY for Christian fellowship and can't seem to find it much these days.  The people in my life either seem to be:

    - people who say they are believers but don't know anything about the Bible

    - are believers but they don't read the Bible or study but attend church because that is what they've always done

    - people who are not believers and don't care

    I want not only fellowship but study and deep thinking and discussions that go deeper than "Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead".

  8. Psalm 147: Especially verses 3 - 5.  How can we ever imagine God's power, who knows all the stars by name?  That HE CREATED!

    Praise the Lord.[a]

    How good it is to sing praises to our God,
        how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
        he gathers the exiles of Israel.
    3 He heals the brokenhearted
        and binds up their wounds.
    He determines the number of the stars
        and calls them each by name.
    Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
        his understanding has no limit.

    The Lord sustains the humble
        but casts the wicked to the ground.

    Sing to the Lord with grateful praise;
        make music to our God on the harp.

    He covers the sky with clouds;
        he supplies the earth with rain
        and makes grass grow on the hills.
    He provides food for the cattle
        and for the young ravens when they call.

    10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
        nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;
    11 the Lord delights in those who fear him,
        who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    12 Extol the Lord, Jerusalem;
        praise your God, Zion.

    13 He strengthens the bars of your gates
        and blesses your people within you.
    14 He grants peace to your borders
        and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.

    15 He sends his command to the earth;
        his word runs swiftly.
    16 He spreads the snow like wool
        and scatters the frost like ashes.
    17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles.
        Who can withstand his icy blast?
    18 He sends his word and melts them;
        he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

    19 He has revealed his word to Jacob,
        his laws and decrees to Israel.
    20 He has done this for no other nation;
        they do not know his laws.[b]

    Praise the Lord.

  9. I have an account and have for years, however I don't post anything about myself on it.   When I'm out there, (which isn't often) my intention is to post something uplifting to others.   I don't "friend" anyone I don't know either. Honestly, people who have 700 + friends out there and post everything about themselves are a bit naive in my opinion.

  10. "All that you say might be true, but what wrong has Jesus ever done to you?"

    Thank you for this.  I have a friend who stopped going to church because of hurt she felt due to a situation that happened over 15 years ago.  I will definitely challenge her with this question!

  11. I seem to remember a church I attended as a teenager said that using instruments in the service was a sin.  Also, wearing nylons was forbidden because it makes men lust, so the ladies had to wear pants.
