How do hear the lord when he speaks to me and discern it from my own voice in my head?

I read the Bible but I don’t feel like I get as much from it as some people. I read the words but I have trouble meditating on them and letting them change me and help me through life.

I know that I should trust God completely, but how do I actually do it? I struggle with letting go of control, and realizing that God is in control. How do I build my trust and faith in him and his plan?
