  3. http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnough...552076620080305 BORDEAUX, France (Reuters) - The mayor of a village in southwest France has threatened residents with severe punishment if they die, because there is no room left in the overcrowded cemetery to bury them. In an ordinance posted in the council offices, Mayor Gerard Lalanne told the 260 residents of the village of Sarpourenx that "all persons not having a plot in the cemetery and wishing to be buried in Sarpourenx are forbidden from dying in the parish." It added: "Offenders will be severely punished." The mayor said he was forced to take drastic action after an administrative court in the nearby town of Pau ruled in January that the acquisition of adjoining private land to extend the cemetery would not be justified. Lalanne, who celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday and is standing for election to a seventh term in this month's local elections, said he was sorry that there had not been a positive outcome to the dilemma. "It may be a laughing matter for some, but not for me," he said. (Reporting by Claude Canellas, Writing by Andrew Dobbie; editing by Sami Aboudi)

  6. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7529227.stm With its spacious, tree-lined grounds and slightly threadbare classrooms, there is nothing obviously unusual about the Kampang Secondary School. It is situated in Thailand's impoverished north-east, and most of the pupils are the children of farmers. Every morning at 0800 they all gather outside to sing the national anthem and watch the flag being raised. Then they have a chance to use the toilets, before heading off the first classes of the day. Kampang is proud of its toilets. Spotless, and surrounded by flowering tropical plants, they have won national awards for cleanliness. But there is something else about them too. Between the girls' toilet and the boys', there is one signposted with a half-man, half-woman figure in blue and red. This is the transsexual toilet, and outside, in front of the mirrors, some decidedly girly-looking teenage boys preen their hair and apply face cream. 'Uncomfortable' The headteacher, Sitisak Sumontha, estimates that in any year between 10% and 20% of his boys consider themselves to be transgender - boys who would rather be girls. The transsexual pupils are delighted with their own facilities "They used to be teased every time they used the boys' toilets," he said, "so they started using the girls' toilets instead. But that made the girls feel uncomfortable. It made these boys unhappy, and started to affect their work." So the school offered to build the transgender boys their own facility, and they welcomed it. Triwate Phamanee is a slightly built 13-year-old who is adamant that he will one day change his gender. "We're not boys," he told me, "so we don't want to use the boys' toilet - we want them to know we are transsexuals." Vichai Saengsakul, 15, agrees. "People need to know that being a transsexual is not a joke," he says, "it's the way we want to live our lives. That's why we're grateful for what the school has done."

But only the mini-museum of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation can boast of possessing such an other-world oddity as the monkey from Mars. The bureau's state crime lab lobby has its requisite displays on forensic science, including an illegal moonshine still and the microscopic fibers that solved the 1981-82 Atlanta child murders. But tucked away in a glass cylinder are the preserved remains of a monkey that three pranksters passed off as an alien 55 years ago in a UFO hoax that drew headlines worldwide. At the height of UFO hysteria then sweeping the nation, two young barbers and a butcher took a dead monkey in 1953, lopped off its tail and applied a liberal dose of hair remover and some green coloring to the carcass. Then they left the primate on an isolated road north of Atlanta in the pre-dawn hours of July 8, 1953, burning a circle into the pavement with a blowtorch before a police officer came around the curve in his patrol car. "If we had been five minutes earlier, we would have caught 'em in the act," said Sherley Brown, the officer who happened on the scene. The barbers, Edward Watters and Tom Wilson, and the butcher, Arnold "Buddy" Payne, told the policeman they came upon a red, saucer-shaped object in the road that night. They said several 2-foot-tall creatures were scurrying about and the trio hit one with their pickup before the other creatures jumped back in the saucer and blasted skyward

A police officer riding a Segway arrested an 18-year-old Jackson woman early Tuesday morning for drunken driving The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported the woman's car was going at least 40 miles per hour when it was spotted by an officer riding the police department's new battery-powered upright transporter around 4 a.m. The Segway tops out around 12 1/2 miles an hour, so the officer was only able to catch up to the woman after she stopped her car. He conducted field sobriety tests and made the arrest. But a Segway can't fit two, so he called for a patrol car to take her to jail. The Jackson police department purchased the Segway last month for $5,500. Police said this is their first Segway-aided arrest. ___

  15. http://wcco.com/iteam/swat.team.honored.2.783216.html -TEAM: SWAT Team Honored For Raid On Wrong House Reporting Caroline Lowe MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― On Monday, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan handed out honors to a team of officers involved in a botched raid at an innocent family's home more than seven months ago. The family is upset and their attorney criticizes the awards and questions the timing. Just days before Christmas, the sound of intruders breaking into their home in North Minneapolis prompted Vang Khang to grab his shotgun to protect his six children. His terrified wife called 911. Khang fired several shots at the "intruders" who turned out to be members of the Minneapolis Police Department's SWAT team. The officers returned fire. Their protective gear prevented them from being harmed by the bullets. No one was hurt in the shootout last Dec. 16 and the Minneapolis Police Chief ordered an internal investigation. The house was left riddled with bullet holes and broken glass. Two days later, Dolan apologized to the family and launched an internal investigation to find out how the SWAT team wound up in an innocent family's house in the middle of the night. The investigation determined that the team had gone there looking for a gang member's guns after an informant gave investigators in the department's Violent Offenders Task Force bad information. The investigation is ongoing. On Monday, Dolan recognized members of the SWAT team for their bravery and how they handled the raid. With Mayor R.T. Rybak and other city officials looking on, the chief handed out medals and commendations. "The easy decision would have been to retreat under covering fire. The team did not take the easy way out," Dolan told the crowd. "This is a perfect example of a situation that could have gone horribly wrong, but did not because of the professionalism with which it was handled." The Khang family was upset when they learned of the awards given to the SWAT team. "They were outraged and they were hurt. They were hurt. To this day this family continues to suffer," said their attorney, former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger. Heffelfinger said the family has notified the city that they plan to file a lawsuit over the botched raid. He questions the timing and motives for the award. "Why now are we seeing the police department honoring these men? In this context, I'm convinced this is an effort on the part of the police leadership to sanitize the conduct of their officers on December 16," he said. "The officers put themselves in harm's way. They were shot at and shot and deserved to be recognized," said Dolan in a statement defending the awards to the SWAT team. Dolan said an internal investigation conducted by his staff cleared the conduct of the SWAT officers who raided the Khang home. More than seven months later, the internal review has not finished looking into how the officers and supervisors in the Violent Offenders' Task Force handled the investigative piece of the case which preceded the raid at the Khang home. So far, no one has been disciplined in connection with the mistaken raid.
  16. We all know that? Do you have a source for such an outrageous allegation? Xan you know that I was just "baiting" Axxman, don't you. Of course this is not really "an allegation". Lighten up, Girl!!!
  17. God did tell us. I pointed that out to you, and you have not addressed it. BTW, it is not my view but God's that I will stick with. DUO's analogy is right? So, unborn babies are the same as unlawful murderers or do you believe unlawful murderers are the same as unborn babies? What does God say? No Xan unborn babies are not the same as unlawful murderers. However, it is appropriate to compare them because they are both killed, and death is death, no matter what you want to believe. The analogy exists legitimately because some of you have been persuaded that Rom. 13 says to obey government, cheerfully, and you have no problem with obeying government's law over the death penalty, but for some reason balk at the government's law over abortion. BTW this should, in no way, be interpreted to mean that I think abortion is a good thing. Now this is strange because a law is a law, so how can anyone justify pleasing God by obeying some the laws of man, but not all? I mean either Romans 13 says that everyone should be subject to (mans') governing authorities, or it doesn't! And Justin, your assertion that: "Our government isn't using Romans 13 to justify its laws. Our Constitution spells out just what responsibilities our government is supposed to be limited to" is almost laughable. You only have to see passages from Rom. 13 posted, or quoted, all the time, in answer to any criticism of the government to realise that it is being used as a "justification" for the government to do what it has been doing. I remember reading - ages ago - that Rom. 13 was used by oppressive regimes throughout history to "influence" their people. And it has recently (by that I mean over the last five or six years) resurfaced. coming from America of all places. As for the US constitution, well that is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. The PATRIOT Act has seen to that. What I find so scary about that is that so many people seem to have been brainwashed to support PATRIOT and "homeland security". Even the argument that "we must support government until they violate God's law" doesn't stand up to this mindset, because there is so much disagreement on what is God's law and what is not. I don't believe (although I do stand to be corrected) that abortion is not mentioned in the US constitution. I am curious, however, as to why you seem to be concerned that legalising abortion is a "violation of the constitution" and yet you don't seem to be concerned at all the other violations of the constitution that have occurred over the last few years.
  18. So guards are some sort of God-like creatures that people daren't "be a wiseguy with" or these super-beings will use their great powers and electrocute the person and beat them, and a jolly good thing it is too! Is that the way you see it? And if the victim of the tasering (or perpetrator of the great crime of trying to joke with a superior being who has the power to hurt them and won't hesitate to use it) happens to be an elderly man with a bad heart, and survives, well that just goes to show how wonderful tasers are. Your second statement sounded just like the above! You're not a security guard, are you? Coz we all know that as most policemen are in the job because they want to pay back society for picking on them at school, and a few are just ordinary sociopaths/phychopaths, security guards are security guards because they really wanted to wear a uniform and bully people but they just couldn't handle the police academy training. And you're not like that at all, are you?
  19. Well, I find this outrageous anyway. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/30/co...s_dna_database/ Plods say it's OK for them give out your DNA By Kablenet Published Wednesday 30th July 2008 09:02 GMT The National Police Improvement Agency has defended allowing companies access to the national DNA database. A spokesperson for the NPIA told GC News that there are "stringent guidelines" surrounding each request for profiles from the National DNA Database, including scrutiny by a newly formed ethics board. "After approval by the National DNA Database Strategy Board, they were made available for authorised research purposes demonstrating clear potential operational benefit to the police in terms of detecting and solving crime. These profiles are completely anonymous and are not identifiable in any way," said the spokesperson. The Liberal Democrats said a series of Freedom of Information requests have revealed that the NPIA has approved 25 applications for research projects using DNA profiles from the DNA database. It said that five came from private companies, with three from LGC and two from Orchid Cellmark, and that no one whose DNA is being used in these projects had given their consent. "Innocent people are on the database, and their DNA will have been included in the research," the party said in a statement. It also said that the police, many of whose officers have added themselves to the database voluntarily, rejected a request for their DNA samples to be used in a research project. Jenny Willott, the party's shadow minister for home affairs, said: "The 25 projects that have been approved by ministers include some sinister explorations into ethnic profiling. It is appalling that these Big Brother practices have been allowed to go on unchecked for so long and with extremely limited ethical standards." Responding to the Liberal Democrats' claim that accesses to the database were allowed for "commercial reasons," the NPIA said that any charge is minimal to recoup administration costs. In June Willott tabled a private member's bill which called for all innocent people to be removed from the DNA database. She told the Commons that although everyone accepts that DNA has been a massive breakthrough in crime detection, the government has pursued this breakthrough in a disproportionate way. Particularly worrying, according to Willott, is number of children on the database, estimated to be more than 700,000 people who were under 18 when they were arrested and their DNA samples taken. 20. I'm sorry but DUO's analogy about abortion is, I reckon anyway, ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!! It seems that a lot of you are interpreting scripture to be how you want it to be, God will be the judge of that. He's the only one who can be the judge. We are all mere mortals, fallen mortals, and not one of us is good enough to judge another where life or death is concerned. We can never be 100% sure whose opinion about any of this is right, we'll just have to wait until God tells us. Meanwhile I'll stick to my view. I get the impression that some of you have swallowed your government's "last resort" attempt to justify evil. Don't you realise that repressive governments throughout the centuries have tried to persuade the people that Rom. 13 says that it is Godly to support the government. Nothing new here. I remember reading that decades ago, I just didn't think I'd come across it in my lifetime.
  21. Actually that is not a Biblical perspective. God did give governments the right to exact the death penalty without His direct intervention in each case. Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. Romans 13:1-4 New American Standard Bible Now I've heard everything!! I thought of not saying this, but debating Christian subjects is what these boards are all about, as well as, of course, glorifying our Lord, so: The Bible says clearly "Thou shalt not kill", "kill" - not "murder" or "premeditatedly (if there is such a word) put to death", but "kill". It also does MOST DECIDEDLY NOT say "thou shalt not kill, unless, of course, you are a government employee carrying out orders". However, what I mean by "I've heard everything" (and I knew that it was only a matter of time before someone said something like this) was that you have twisted scripture to make it sound like "what the government, or government employees, do, is on God's behalf". That idea is just, well ........... SICK!!!! Was the FBI "acting for God" when it phychologically tortured people at Waco, Texas, in 1993, burned down their compound, and then destroyed all the evidence with military tanks? Was the FBI acting on behalf of God at Ruby Ridge, in 1992? Gee, there are so many examples, I could go on all night ......... Suffice to say: I am now wondering why the judge in the Nuremberg trials of 1946 ruled against the defence of "I was just following orders" when these people were obviously acting on God's behalf. Well, if you are going to say that Rom. 13, says "authority has been handed from God to government", then I guess that goes for the Nazi government as well.
  22. What I am seriously wondering about with this one is why weren't the security guards charged with grevious bodily harm, or assault at the very least? And I am totally flabergastered by this statement: "We conducted an internal review of this incident that determined the response to the aggression was appropriate." Does this mean that the security guard in question is not only exonnerated but gets to keep his job? I guess this all means that we really are in end times. ________________________________________________________________________________ ___ http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/07/25/...tpop_story#ccmm Tasered Grandpa Sues Hospital July 25, 2008 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (CBS) A grandfather and pastor is suing a Toledo, Ohio hospital after being tasered and beaten by security guards at the facility. Much of the incident was caught by surveillance cameras. Al Poisson, 67, says he was visiting a friend in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center a year ago and was in a very good mood when he came upon a glum-looking guard and joked with him. "I said (to the guard), 'Are you happy today?' Poisson told Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith Friday. "He said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Well, you oughta tell your face!' " Poisson added that, "It went downhill from there" and turned into an "atrocious, unbelievable situation, to say the least." The guards wound up taking Poisson outside the building, where they used a taser and/or stun gun on him, dropping him to his knees and, he says, beat, kicked and "manhandled" him when he was down. It all happened in front of Poisson's son and Poisson's six-year-old grandson. The Web site of CBS affiliate WTOL-TV in Toledo cites Poisson's lawsuit as claiming Poisson's son pleaded with the guards to stop because Poisson has a bad heart The Web site also says a police report quotes the security guards as asserting that Poisson provoked them and that, once outside, Poisson elbowed one guard and tried to pull his hair while on the ground. The guards called Toledo police and had Poisson arrested for alleged assault, but those charges have since been dropped. Poisson says he used to go to St. Vincent's regularly to pray with patients, but no longer can cope with doing that. He also says he's had to give up his duties at a local soup kitchen that's since closed. Poisson is seeking punitive damages of an unspecified amount, along with damages for pain, suffering, medical expenses and lost income. The lawsuit also says the hospital doesn't train its security personnel properly. St. Vincent's issued a statement saying, "According to our policy regarding physical aggression, the use of a taser is warranted if someone attempts to physically attack a staff member, patient or visitor. We conducted an internal review of this incident that determined the response to the aggression was appropriate." "That's not true at all," Poisson responded to Smith when the statement was read.
  23. I am putting these stories here because they are news stories, and I did think twice before posting them in case anyone objected, but I do think it's important to see how the world's morals have "gone downhill" so badly, and it's about time that people said "enough is enough" and started respecting the constitution. We cannot just sit back and say "the Lord will take care of it", I believe this is why he gave us free will. http://rawstory.com//news/2008/Missouri_Po...oy_19_0726.html David Edwards and Diane Sweet Published: Saturday July 26, 2008 KY 3 News' Sara Sheffield reports on an injured teen from Ozark, Missouri who was tasered up to 19 times by police. Passing motorists called Ozark police out of concern for the teen as he walked along the busy overpass. When the police arrived, the young man was lying on the shoulder of the highway directly underneath the 30 foot high overpass with a broken back and foot. Doctors believe 16-year-old Mace Hutchinson broke his back and heel after falling, as his injuries are consistent with such a fall. The boy's family does not understand why police would have tasered the the teen 19 times after he was so seriously injured. The teen's father said that the use of the taser caused Mace to develop an elevated white blood cell count, leading to a fever that delayed the young man's otherwise immediate surgery by two days. Ozark Police Capt. Thomas Rousset attempted to explain why the taser was used: "He refused to comply with the officers and so the officers had to deploy their Tasers in order to subdue him. He is making incoherent statements; he's also making statements such as, 'Shoot cops, kill cops,' things like that. So there was cause for concern to the officers." Ozark police say that while there remains unanswered questions in the case, the reason for the use of the Taser is not one of them. ________________________________________________________________________________ "He refused to comply with the officers and so the officers had to deploy their Tasers in order to subdue him. He is making incoherent statements ........" Really? So do they really expect a teenager with a broken back and foot and possibe head injuries (I'd be suprised if he didn't have head injuries) to "comply" with their demands )probably to "get up"? And "incoherent statements" - yeah, well, that is what people with head injuries often do. ________________________________________________________________________________ _________ And this one is related, so here it is: http://www.startribune.com/nation/25880009.html Paralyzed man claims Chicago police dragged him from car when he didn't get out quickly Associated Press Last update: July 24, 2008 - 8:31 PM CHICAGO - A paralyzed man claimed in a lawsuit Thursday that seven Chicago police officers dragged him from a car and beat him unconscious when he was too slow to obey their order to get out of the vehicle. Daniel Casares claims the officers engaged in excessive use of force and battery. His federal lawsuit against the city and seven officers asks for unspecified damages. Casares is a quadriplegic as a result of a car accident four years before the traffic stop, his attorney Blake Horwitz said. In October 2006, the seven officers stopped a car in which Casares was riding in the passenger seat. His complaint says the officers asked him to get out and when he didn't do so immediately they dragged him out, and some or all the officers allegedly kicked Casares while he was on the ground. Casares was convicted of battery and resisting arrest in the traffic stop. He received court supervision and is appealing his conviction. A spokeswoman for the city law department, Jenny Hoyle, declined to comment because she said she hadn't seen the complaint. ________________________________________________________________________________ __________________ This is so amazing: "Casares was convicted of battery and resisting arrest in the traffic stop." How, how can a paralysed man be guilty of "battery and resisting arrest"? It is not physically possible.

  25. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/irelan...3340820_pf.html MARK HENNESSY, Political Correspondent Mon, Jul 28, 2008 PEOPLE TRAVELLING between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom will be subjected to stiffer identity checks before the end of the year, British officials have told the Government. Under the move, British police will be able to demand extra information about, and from, people travelling through airports in Belfast and Derry and ports in Larne and Stranraer. The powers were included under Section 14 of the Police and Justice Act 2006 passed at Westminster, and can be brought into force by ministers by signing regulations. The British government has now told the Department of Justice that it intends to hold a round of consultations before introducing the changes. The changes will be fiercely unpopular with unionists, who have argued that it means they will be treated as second-class citizens within the United Kingdom. Passport and other identity checks will be introduced between the Republic and Great Britain - but not between the Republic and Northern Ireland - from 2009 for air travellers, and the following year for those travelling by sea under London's e-borders security system. In practice, the change - though it ends a 50-year-old common travel area - matters little since airlines and ferries have long demanded that passengers offer proof of identity. The British prime minister, Gordon Brown, in a letter to Ian Paisley when he was still Northern Ireland's first minister, went to considerable lengths to deny that British citizens would be required to produce identity documents to travel within their own country. However, it is argued by some that the production of a passport, or a national ID card, is the only way in which an e-borders system requiring advance, verifiable information about passengers could operate effectively. The two governments have also agreed that vehicles being carried by ferry can be searched to ensure that all passengers on board have proper documentation, while the ferries themselves could be fined for not ensuring that passengers' papers were in order. The two governments have also agreed that vehicles being carried by ferry can be searched to ensure that all passengers on board have proper documentation, while the ferries themselves could be fined for not ensuring that passengers' papers were in order. In a House of Commons written parliamentary answer, British Home Office minister Liam Byrne said: "The intention is that the power will be brought into force by secondary legislation in 2008... Once the proposals have been finalised they will be subject to a 12-week public consultation. "It is expected that this police power will only apply to air and sea routes between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Passengers will not be required to use passports, but may be required to produce one of several types of documentation, including passports, when travelling, to enable the carrier to meet the requirements of a police request," he said. The need for stiffer identity checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom is deemed inevitable by the British government since both it and the Irish Government accept that such controls along the Border are impractical.
