Hey looking for some biblical examples of people who had to get rid of their old crowd because their old friends were keeping them from God
Old or New testament examples would be great
Thanks alot!!

These matters are not to be answered merely by law, but by spirit. The tenor of the Word is not simply for the sake of obeying, but to season the heart to tenderness. If the unbeliever has rejected the relationship, than this is an act of divorce all within itself. In this manner the unbeliever has really freed the believer
-
I agree it does - but there seems ti be a stigma present, that is unlike any other. In this day and age it is less injurious to live with a member of the opposite sex and break up, come to repentance than to have tried to live right and suffer a divorce
it gets old
-
in my many years of ministry I have seen some really hardline views on divorce and remarriage or divorce and ministry and I have to tell you - I am pretty much sick of the whole mess
While I will agree that marriage is a holy and sacred institution and plan of God - I am shocked and amazed with the ease that we dismiss individuals because of past failures - even those that occur after salvation.
There are so many who are abandoned or cheated on or left or abused and I know "It takes two to tango" and so on - but gee so many times there is a legitimate victim, was he/she perfect? No of course not - but they may have been victimized nonetheless. Abandoned, abused or infidelity - in such cases I would have no problem marry such an individual or letting them in a pulpit
I'd love to hear your thoughts

I would call the local shelter. They will investigate it and if need be take the dog from the owner - and while I realize there is a potential risk the animal may be euthanized isnt that better than having it in the heat, rain, snow and everything else?
Also realize that the family will know you called the shelter, and this could become problematic for the neighborhood harmony...
if it was me - I would have never let them know my feelings and taken the poor pup in the middle of the night
I feel for the little guy

In years past I got caught up in the whole translation war. Now I dont worry about it so much. If I am just dying to know the most truest intent of the text - I think this takes alot more than a translation.
I think one has to discover context first by culture, events and people influencing the writing. Then I get out the strongs, thayers etc... and various translations
so in short I am not sure the translation one uses is overly critical if they understand that translations give limited, yet adequate illumination

So far so good

That's a rotten attitude. She sees her husband every day, and he only sees his children twice a month. I get sick of the lack of gratitude from these wives. If they didn't want to deal with step children, then they shouldn't have married a man with children. Since the lady in your church did marry a man with children, then she needs to look at the fact he takes care of his responsibilities and loves his children as a blessing, and she should stop punishing the children.
in this case you hit it on the head - and I agree
-
I agree wayne.
Can love be ordered? Do we love one child above another or one person in our family more than another?
I would say any man or women for that matter that demands some sort of precedence in love would be a problem for even thinking that way. As a husband and father I would never even think about whether my wife loves me or my children more or who has precedence, I think the thought itself is in a way not Christian. Love means giving yourself, not dominating or competing for affection.
Great thoughts here. How different it is when Christianity is a Spirit and not mere legislation! Wow - talk about capturing the heart of Jesus Christ!

What Bible Translation Is Really The Best? Do you have personal favorite and if so WHY?
-
Blended famililies are hard stuff. I have a couple in my church who the spouse after about a decade of marriage has a little attitude about the step child that visits every other weekend. She constantly tells her husband that she must be first and so on... Its tough stuff - the man loves her dearly but he loves his child as well, and wants to care for both of them, not make a decision between the two
-
I've heard it said that ones spouse is suppose to come first above all things... What about in front of and before children? What is someone has a child and remarries - should the new spouse now have precedence over the child? Should a man or woman cling to thier spouse and regard the feelings of their spouse above thier child?
Please give me your thoughts, and what you think that

Interesting thought! Good observation

Got any tricks to pull on my Pastor friends house? If so let me know!
thanks

Ovedya - I think we are dealing with an issue of Personal preference.
How can you call it leaven? What makes Christian metal sinful or

I am for bare feet in church - let em be comfortable in the house of God... I am there to see Jesus and to fellowship with His people. Leave the fashion show and stoic spirits to the folks on Broadway Fifth Avenue and Paris

I find it is very sad that people can not trust the Word of the God-to deny what Jesus said because it is more comfortable emotionally.
Matthew7:13"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14"For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
But the Bible does warn about the eartickling delusions:
2 Timothy 4:1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom 2preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
love your sister in Christ
Can I tell you what is sad? That Christians cannot enter into honest dialog on a subject without someone taking the low raod of calling them "weak" or "compromisers" or "deniers of the Word" or "delusional" yada yada yada

Well I am not saying that there is no hell... But there are great many benefits of salvation outside of the eternal aspects - such as fellowship with God, provision of God, a sound mind and healing to name a few. There are many more as well - not to mention the renewing of our thinking from the destruction of the carnal mind - which cannot even conceive the things of God.
My personal reflection is hell was created for Satan and his angels. Unfortunately people or humanity decided to essentially follow Satan as well. Not for me, because I have placed my faith in Jesus Christ, but for others I truly sorrow at the thought of a literal hell. That does not mean I dont believe, because I do, just simply sad at suffering

Guess deep down I wonder how much it really matters. Do we really need to know the exact wording of every single text? Can we without knowing Greek and Hebrew? If the heart is right, isnt it the Spirit of the Word anyway?
-
I am finding that more and more Christians do not believe in a literal hell - with fire and brimestone
What do you think?
- They're nuts
- Could be
- This is what the bible really says...

As a general rule, I don't think it matters. However, there are certain translations that are better than others. While the KJV may have beautiful prose, it is not reliable. It is based on texts that are not the oldest or most reliable, and as such are prone to some errors (most theological institutions dismiss it as useless based on the errors within). That is not to say taht I never read the KJV. I often use to contrast the different views of Christians throughout history and how people saw the Christian God in a time that I did not belong to. There is some great study to view how one person looked at one verse and how their opinion affected it.
That said, I don't use a single version. It may be convoluted, but I use multiple sources. My suggestion (or at least, this is what I do) - download a program called "E-sword" - Source. It's a free Bible-program that at its most basic level provides a KJV with Strong's Dictionary (each word in the Bible in its original Greek, Hebrew or Aramaic, which has the advantage of you being able to click on any word and it gives translations of what the word means, with all the different possibilities, this is helpful in understanding difficult words and passages). From here, then you can download different versions of the Bible onto the program from their website, as well as different Commentaries from some of the most influential figures in Christian history (including some Jewish sources that paint the Bible in a decidedly Jewish light - gives good contrast).
The versions of the Bible I prefer are the English Standard Version and the New International Version. The NIV is not as word-for-word accurate as translations such as the ESV, but is much more readable. The ESV is much much more literal, but because of this literal difference, is slightly harder to read (Grammatically speaking). But both are much easier than reading a version written 400 years ago using "thee's" and "thou's" and "behests" (even assuming the KJV were accurate, which is not - on the side, an interesting article debating two versions of the Bible (KJV vs Jehovah's Witnesses), they come to the same conclusion - no single text is the right one, which is why I like the ESV's policy of using "Majority-text" views when looking at the earliest manuscripts *"majority text" refers to finding all the earliest scripts and choosing the one that has the most support, not necessarily the one that supports your view*. Another good version (though I don't use much since I can only use via Biblegateway.com is the New American Standard Bible (NASB). Or for a Jewish perspective, you can download the "Jewish Publications Society" (JPS) Old Testament from E-sword. It's good for a Jewish perspective, and is helpful when looking for a Jewish point of view, but obviously is only available in Old Testament.
I also own a few Commentaries and Dictionaries of my own which I own and refer to at home, which all help add to the study. But I won't go into all that. Suffice it to say, I use all these texts when reading the Bible to get the most complete picture I possibly can, to get the most complete picture possible and view all possibilities and probabilities.
I think limiting ourselves to one translation only limits God, since translating from one language to another is never an exact science. Words that have certain meanings in one language can be totally and differently used in other languages.
I find using all these tools and commentaries and dictionaries and various translations provides me with a solid overall view of the Bible.
But in a general sense, most Bible's will generally have the same text, so if you don't have the time or the energy to go into all the commentaries and versions, the NIV, ESV, or NASB, would be my Bible of choice if available.
Hope this helps
it does help alot! I'd love to see some links refering to the studies you discussed concerning the KJV if you have them available... If not, no problem. Just love to have supportive materials when discussing with others
I have e-sword, I'll look for the ESV module. I think I have it already. Doesn't the NIV leave out some text?
Another side item of interest that I'd love for you to elaborate on is:
I often use to contrast the different views of Christians throughout history and how people saw the Christian God in a time that I did not belong to.thanks

I think C.S. Lewis said it best in a children's book:
Lucy: "Is He safe?"
Mr. Beaver: "Safe? Of course He isn't safe! But He's very good."
ahhh great observation! Perhaps I can digest that a bit
-
I like the KJV as well - but also like the NIV too. I know it has its supposed issues but I still think it's a pretty good translation
-
Do you think it matters what translation of the Bible a person uses?
If so which one, and why - what makes it better?
Some are die hard KJV fans, others of the NIV - some think all but the KJV is a perversion. Personally I can see how the newer translations though lacking in some ways, may actually be more readable promoting better biblical literacy
Any thoughts?
