Bradlee /Cain article

I hope I can start a topic now - if I'm not supposed to- please remove.

Okay, I shared this on another board but I'm curious to see what you guys see in this.

I like reading Larry Elder from time to time. He is libertarian, however, I find some things he say that I agree with or I think is stating what others are not paying close attention. Anyway- he wrote an article about Ben Bradlee's comment on Cain "have it coming to him" regarding the sexual allegations and that 50 years ago he could have gotten away with it but not anymore today.

I will preface this to say : I understand what the point is about with politicians getting away with sexual hijinks in the past BUT.... (Clinton comes close to allegations and actual misconduct but this isn't about him though.)

(Maybe it is the English major or the history minor in me but... something stood out like a sore thumb)

Ben Bradlee states that Herman Cain could have gotten away with this fifty years ago. Ok, to think this is an accurate statement, in my view, is wanting because 1. fifty years ago, Cain couldn't even muster any support to even think about running for president let alone thinking he can get away with any sexual advance on a white woman times four. 2. Would anyone have hid the facts that Cain molested or sexually harrassed more than one white woman? Really, could Cain have actually gotten away with this behavior in that era where racism and civil rights were at the front news?

I want to say.. ok, have you really taken a good look at what you are actually saying here.. a statement is true if the inherent logic or truth can be held up and be proven true. In this case, I don't think this statement is accurate and as a reporter or news commentator, Bradlee should have known the effect of his rhetoric about Cain.

Would we expect someone who just in passing say that Jesse Jackson could have gotten away with molesting 4 women and paying them off in 1930's? He'd just get away scot free. WOuld that be a factual statement? Don't you think the media would have a field day on that?

I didn't actually state any "math"? I knew it was in the 1960's where things like racism and civl rights were being stirring in the pot. That is why I kinda referred to the general period. ;)

I was born in the Reagan yrs in Louisiana and people STILL had problems with the whole idea never mind that Morial was voted in New Orleans.

I just had a thought, did you mean the 1930's comment...that was separate. I was saying that for effect.

Very good point - in 1961 a black man sexually harassing a white woman might have ended his life.
