Love and compassion can be shown in many different ways. A kind word, a thoughtful deed or even a smile. These are but a fraction of the lengths the action of love can manifest in. Love is best revealed in selflessness. When one holds others in regards above themselves. This does not mean that how we feel is not important, but rather, how we feel is uplifted as we reach a place where our delight is to serve others.
When our satisfaction comes from the spiritual, emotional and/or physical gain of others.

Perhaps even in the deeper depths of this love, is allowing it to flow freely to all we encounter. The undeserving and those who may consider us an enemy. What real meaningful satisfaction is there in repaying wrong doings with a trivial instant gratification of vain vindication? What is accomplished?  When we reward ill intentions with good intentions, it kills the spreading of a deadly poison called hate. It administers grace in the place of revenge and peace in the place of chaos.

When people and/or circumstances are interacted with by this standard, it plants a seed of good behind the scenes and sometimes turns thoughts, feelings and events around on a dime. Whether or not the other person acknowledges our efforts immediately or even at all is of no consequence because it is not in vain and will bloom beautiful results in it's own way and time. We can never truly understand what others have been through or why they behave the way that they choose. This is where compassion should be a constant virtue amongst our inner thinking. Encouragement has a huge impact on others and love, in even the smallest measure, breaks the bondages of hate, fear and sorrow

Self control is essential when dealing with selflessness, and it is not always easy. However, to practice something is to allow ourselves to get better at what we practice until it becomes part of our nature. We are everchanging and growth is an important part of life and it's endeavors. Our biggest enemy is often ourselves and selflessness truly sets us on a path to freedom and love is and should be the whole duty of man. God bless you all!
