During the daily White House press briefing, Mr. Sullivan revealed that the latest arms shipment to Kyiv, marking the first in months, will include anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition, artillery rounds, and armored vehicles. “Today, on behalf of President Biden, I’m proud to announce an emergency security assistance package, along with $300 million in weapons and equipment, to meet some of Ukraine’s critical needs,” Sullivan told journalists. He added, “The world is observing. Time is of the essence, and it’s crucial that we see immediate action.” Mr. Sullivan explained that the Biden administration gathered the necessary funds for the $300 million aid through recent cost savings in Pentagon purchases. U.S. officials assembled the amount by utilizing savings from several contracts to replenish U.S. military stockpiles, which were secured at lower-than-expected costs. For months, the Biden administration has urged Congress to approve its 2024 military aid proposal for Ukraine, a substantial package valued at approximately $60 billion — 200 times the amount announced on Tuesday. The aid proposal for Ukraine has been delayed in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives since the 2024 budget plans were introduced last year, with initial demands from Republicans to tie the assistance to new immigration laws for the U.S. southern border. House Speaker Mike Johnson has steadfastly refused to bring the aid package to a vote. Complicating matters, former President Donald Trump, likely the Republican nominee for president, argues that the U.S. has excessively funded Ukraine, advocating for the redirection of those resources to domestic concerns, especially the security of the U.S. border. On Tuesday, House Democrats failed to bring a new $95 billion aid package for Ukraine to a vote through a “discharge petition.” Since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. has provided approximately $75 billion in both military and humanitarian support. The white house has proven it can actually run a budget and cut costs when it comes to circumnavigating congress, but not when it comes to eliminating national debt.
