Soros is evil, he's not just a socialist. AK, I told you it's not an issue I care to debate. My wife and I support a variety of church based charities that go into places like this and provide relief. I will not get into bed nor have my name associated with Soros and I will support any anti Christian, anti American organization. As far as chocolate goes, I dont eat it, and we all know how hyper Marnie is, so that is a mute issue for us. :noidea:

No one is asking you to support Soros. You can go through other companies, or encourage other people to go through companies (such as "Newman's Own"...the proceeds go to non-partisan charities) if you don't buy chocolate.

What disturbs me, I guess, is that you took more offense to the idea I would buy something from George Soros than the reality that 9 and 10 year old children are working as slaves so we can enjoy chocolate...

Lots of people love to give out chocolate on Easter...or for any occasion really. The problem is that half of the world's chocolate is made in West Africa...and most of that comes from the Ivory Coast. What's the problem with that?

The problem is that about 260,000 children, 64% under the age of 14, work on these farms. The problem is that an estimated 15,000 are outright slaves, while the rest are indentured servants (parents had to pay off a debt, so they gave up their kids). Many of these kids are worked for long hours, are underpaid, underfed, and some are even beaten to death.

I know some people might not see a problem with this, but as Christians we cannot support such actions. Our heritage and doctrine do not allow for it. Recently, a movie came out about William Wilberforce and his fight against slavery on Christian principles. Slavery is not a dead issue today, just a silent one. As Christians, we should do two things:

1) Find ways to support ending slavery in West Africa. Though there is not much we can do, writing a letter to a congressman or helping form a Christian organization to battle this (instead of leaving it up to the secular groups) would be a wonderful thing.

2) This is a bit more plausible - buy chocolate from companies that can promise they don't use "slave chocolate." A short list (not complete) is this:

Clif Bar

Cloud Nine

Dagoba Organic Chocolate

Denman Island Chocolate

Gardners Candies

Green and Black's

Kailua Candy Company

Koppers Chocolate

L.A. Burdick Chocolates

La Siembre

Montezuma's Chocolates

Newman's Own Organics

Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company

Rapunzel Pure Organics

The Endangered Species Chocolate Company

I prefer Newman's Own because you can get it anywhere, it's organic, and the company actually monitors all farm sites. If any of you know of any other chocolate companies that don't use slave chocolate (it doesn't have to be organic), please post them here.

I think we should be aware of these things, and take action if we can. Though we can't all write letters to congress or help form organizations, we can watch what we buy. :emot-highfive:

AK, Cadbury's is not on your list. And "Newman's own" - well I would but you can't "get it anywhere", in fact I've never even heard of it.

How about supmarket "own" brands (plain pack chocolate, that sort of thing)? The choice here is really limited.

Now why didn't you tell me about this a month or so ago, I've already bought all the family's easter eggs. And they are all Cadbury's. The emphasis is not on chocolate this time, my husband is getting a small egg attached to a book about how to train dogs, my son is getting a small egg attached to a book about the resurrection and my daughter is getting a small egg attached to a crucifix on a chain.

Hopefully they will remember this Easter.

The list isn't complete. I think Cadbury in both England and New Zealand are safe (though I'm not sure). In the US, however, it is suspect since Hershey bought the rights to manufacture and distribute it.
