South Island Prisons regional manager Paul Monk said Graham Nolan, 23, who is serving a six-year sentence for burglary and vehicle theft, escaped about 8am yesterday while making a pre-arranged visit to the hospital. The department did not say what treatment he was seeking. Nolan was handcuffed to an officer during the visit to the hospital, Monk said. "Mr Nolan is of an unusually slight build and a preliminary investigation suggests this allowed him to be able to free his hand," he said. Two Corrections officers gave chase but were unable to catch Nolan, and notified police immediately, he said. "Naturally, I am concerned about this breach of security, and a thorough investigation is now under way to establish the facts and see how we can prevent this happening again." Sergeant Dave Robertson, of the Sydenham police, said the escape was short-lived and the man was back in custody by 8.35am. "After a sighting in the Addington Cemetery area, police put cordons in and he was located by a police dog handler after a search and short pursuit," he said. Nolan would face charges of escaping custody, Robertson said.
