The main purpose in putting a radar site there to begin with is to have American personnel in country. By virtue of their location they are not in the line of fire, per se, but if the Americans are endangered then the U.S. has the right to "defend/avenge" them. This is more of a "got your back" scenario where the U.S. isn't standing on the front line but should push come to shove the U.S. has more at stake than a promise.
