The Forming of the Body of Christ. Paul goes to Jerusalem & Corrections.

Paul goes to Jerusalem. (AD 49) (Acts 15: 1 - 35)

Corrections - Certain men taught circumcision.

`And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” (Acts 15: 1)

Thus there arose dissension and a disputation concerning circumcision. Paul and Barnabas and others, were then asked to go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders about this question. Some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up saying that it was necessary to circumcise them and to keep the law of Moses. (Acts 15: 5)

Peter stood up in the council and declared that by his mouth the Gentiles heard the good news of salvation and received the Holy Spirit also. Thus it pleased the Council to send leading men to Antioch saying that “we gave no such commandment.”  (Acts 15: 6 - 29)

Corrections - Peter, no return to the Law.

When Paul returned to Antioch he met Peter and had to address his wrong behaviour.

`when Peter had come to Antioch, I (Paul) withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.` (Gal. 2: 11 - 13)

Paul corrected Peter and the others, saying that “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of the Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?” (Gal. 2: 14)

Corrections - Apollos, limited revelation.

While Paul taught many of the Body of Christ, there were others who only knew limited revelation of God`s purposes concerning the Jews. Apollos was one who although very good in the Old Testament scriptures did not know of the Lord`s further purpose regarding the Body of Christ.  (Acts 18: 24 & 25)

When disciples of Paul, Aquila and Priscilla heard Apollos teach they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately. They explained about the Body of Christ and the Lord`s purpose for them. Thus Apollos was able to teach others of these truths and refute errors.

`(Apollos) greatly helped those who had believed through grace; for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. (Acts 18: 26 - 28)

a keeping of the law of Moses in other words which was/is works based...it is at this point that what Paul was preaching was different to what was the norm of those times. Paul had lots of Revelations from the Lord...including the mysteries that God revealed to him. which are extremely interesting not least because every Saved Christian should know about these but anyway i digress...

what is important to realise here is that Peter was endorsing Paul's Salvation message, the WHAT message. but not only Peter but the church council which btw was led by James and not by Peter as is assumed, again by careful study it is clear that this is so. and the council refuted the teaching of the men who came down from Judea.

an interesting point is that the term Christian was first used in Antioch, and hence not Jerusalem, or Rome come to that.

Peter it seems was never comfortable with Gentiles, we dont hear much of Peter running with Gentiles but Paul has been mandated by God no less to be the Apostles of the Gentiles

Rom 11:13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

Paul was also discipling others to preach the message of Salvation, a kind of early church planting. he was also teaching them the epistles how to be a Christian, an instruction, guidance, which was essential then (and now) because they lived in a time when the world was mostly Pagan , and these teachings fortify and build and lay a foundation of truths. and also he taught the mysteries that were revealed to him. the basic tenants of doctrine. which would save them and us today from falling into false doctrines...it 'opens your eyes somewhat!'

Apollos was still preaching the message of John the Baptist; water baptism along with the WHO Jesus Christ was/is and Aquila and Priscilla helped to further Apollos understanding.
