The Forming of the Body of Christ. Paul goes to Jerusalem & Corrections.
Paul goes to Jerusalem. (AD 49) (Acts 15: 1 - 35)
Corrections - Certain men taught circumcision.
`And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” (Acts 15: 1)
Thus there arose dissension and a disputation concerning circumcision. Paul and Barnabas and others, were then asked to go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders about this question. Some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up saying that it was necessary to circumcise them and to keep the law of Moses. (Acts 15: 5)
Peter stood up in the council and declared that by his mouth the Gentiles heard the good news of salvation and received the Holy Spirit also. Thus it pleased the Council to send leading men to Antioch saying that “we gave no such commandment.” (Acts 15: 6 - 29)
Corrections - Peter, no return to the Law.
When Paul returned to Antioch he met Peter and had to address his wrong behaviour.
`when Peter had come to Antioch, I (Paul) withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.` (Gal. 2: 11 - 13)
Paul corrected Peter and the others, saying that “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of the Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?” (Gal. 2: 14)
Corrections - Apollos, limited revelation.
While Paul taught many of the Body of Christ, there were others who only knew limited revelation of God`s purposes concerning the Jews. Apollos was one who although very good in the Old Testament scriptures did not know of the Lord`s further purpose regarding the Body of Christ. (Acts 18: 24 & 25)
When disciples of Paul, Aquila and Priscilla heard Apollos teach they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately. They explained about the Body of Christ and the Lord`s purpose for them. Thus Apollos was able to teach others of these truths and refute errors.
`(Apollos) greatly helped those who had believed through grace; for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. (Acts 18: 26 - 28)
