The Forming of the Body of Christ. Paul`s Second Missionary Journey.
Paul`s second Missionary Journey. (AD 49 - 52) (Acts 15: 36 - 18: 22)
2.Truth - His Coming for the Saints. (Thessalonians)
The Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Body, was giving Paul fresh revelation of His further purposes - the Body of Christ. This revelation was not known in previous times.
When Paul went on his second missionary journey he went over into Macedonia spending time with the new converts in Thessalonica and also in other towns. Then when Paul was in Corinth he wrote to the Thessalonians.
In this Paul`s first letter we read of how he was like a father and mother to the Thessalonians. (1 Thess. 2: 7 & 11) We read of the wonderful truth of the `catching away` of the saints to be with the Lord, a revelation not known previously.
This wonderful truth encouraged Paul`s disciples, the Thessalonians, who were concerned about those believers who had died. Paul goes on to explain -
`But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you should sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.....
And we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall be always with the Lord.` (1 Thess. 4: 13 - 17)
3.Truth - Before the Day of the LORD.
The term `Day of the LORD,` was known by the believers because it referred to the nation of Israel and the Gentiles. The Old Testament had great detail concerning this dark period of time.
`The great day of the LORD is near; .....that day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities and against the high towers.` (Zeph. 1: 14 - 16)
Paul told the Thessalonians that that Day would not overtake them as they were sons of light and not darkness. (1 Thess. 5: 1 - 5)
`But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief.` (1 Thess. 5: 4)
Then in Paul`s second letter to the Thessalonians he explains in detail what will happen in the Day of the Lord. (Note `Day,` is a time period AND a specific day.)
`...the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.` (2 Thess. 1: 7 & 8)
