The Forming of the Body of Christ. Paul`s Prison Letters.
Paul`s Prison Letters. (AD 56 - 60) (Acts 21: 27 - 28)
Heresies - (Colossians)
Paul also told the elders of Ekklesia at Ephesus that he may soon be imprisoned when he went to Jerusalem. He warned them of the dangers to come.
` For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also, from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.` (Acts 20: 29 & 30)
After Paul went to Jerusalem he was arrested and sent to prison, eventually in Rome. Writing to the believers in Colossae he says -
`Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you...` (Col. 4: 10)
Paul warns the believers of Colossae that different heresies have crept in.
Legality Heresy.
`Let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths..,` (Col. 2: 16)
This heresy was legality in its Alexandrian form of asceticism, with a trace of Judaic observance of `days,` The object was the mortification of the body.
`For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.` (Rom. 8: 13)
Paul directs the believer`s focus to the Lord reminding them that they are `complete in Him,....circumcised...buried....raised....made alive...forgiven....` (Col. 2: 10 - 15)
False Mysticism.
`taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, ....why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations - “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle.` (Col. 2: 18, 20 & 21)
This false mysticism was `intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind and not holding fast to the Head..` (Col. 2: 18 & 19)
This is the result of philosophic speculation. Paul reminds the believers to `seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting....set your mind on things above..` (Col. 3: 1 & 2)
Because these are ever present perils, Colossians was written not for that day only, but for the warning of the believers in all centuries.
