The Forming of the Body of Christ. Rome.
Practical Advice - (1 Timothy & Titus)
The Apostle Paul is coming towards the end of his ministry and he desires to pass on to the younger men practical advice for ministering among believers and for holding fast to sound doctrine.
Timothy was like a son to the aging Paul. Thus he entrusts Timothy to the oversight of believers at Ephesus and Titus to Cyprus. Guidelines are given as to the conduct of those whom would be given responsibility among the believers.
`Remind them (believers) to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing humility to all men.` (Titus 3: 1 & 2)
Paul is re-arrested and taken to Rome. (AD 66)
There he writes to his `son in the Lord` his final words. He is concerned that Timothy would fight the good fight of faith and pass on what he has been taught to others who will then also make disciples.
`And these things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach other also.` (2 Tim. 2: 2)
The Early Believers to the Present Day.
Paul is executed in AD 67. Three years later, AD 70, was destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans. This caused many Jews and believers to be persecuted and thus they spread throughout the region and beyond. Apostasy set in its first form of legalism. From there other errors and heresies developed -over many centuries.
- Bishops instead of apostles.-
- Division of Priests and Laity.
- Connection to the State.
- Tradition instead of the Holy Spirit.
- Sprinkling of infants.
- Indulgences.
Finally the great truths, one at a time, came to be received. Thus over many centuries the whole counsel of God was clarified across the Body of Christ. Each truth would require a firm standing against the heresies. Many died as martyrs, yet each truth was steadily received by more and more believers.
Then in our day we have the full truth of Christ, His character and His purposes for -
- the Body of Christ, for Israel and for the Nations. (Eph. 4: 13, 1 Cor. 10: 32)
We have the distinctive truth of their different inheritances, known as
- the eternal purpose of God. (Eph. 1: 9 & 10, 3: 11)
