Babylon. Overview.
OVERVIEW
Babylon is on its way toward popularity again. A mere 2600 years ago, Babylon stood as the greatest city on earth, the capital of the world. The grandeur of the mighty city can be imagined by gazing on the restoration that is in progress.
Babylon is where Nebuchadnezzar built the hanging gardens and where Alexander the Great died. Millennia before that, mankind attempted to build a tower `whose top may reach to heaven, and as a result, their languages were confused, and they were scattered over the face of the earth. This area is appropriately called the `cradle of civilization. `
Over the centuries Babylon has risen and then fallen again. In recent times Saddam Hussein built a city for his glory on the site of ancient Babylon as an effort to connect himself with Nebuchadnezzar and the greatness of the past. New walls were built around the ancient city, and Saddam also built fortifications on top of Babylon`s ruins.
Today there is much restoration of this ancient city of Babylon, and it is very popular with tourists. The government of Iraq have great plans for the city – ancient and modern. To facilitate this, they are building a very large deep-water port at the mouth to the Persian Gulf.
Stage 1 is already completed, and the plan is to enlarge the Port to become not only the biggest in the Middle East, but the biggest port in the world. A high-speed train connects to the port and will enable goods, oil and other things to be transported through Iraq, Turkey and then on to Europe.
We can now see the stage being set for Babylon to again take its prophesied place as capital of the world.
