  1. It looks like the folks who put together that presentation (it looks like the youtube link has been removed from my post above) seem to think the solution to the day names issue lies in Genesis. They call themselves the "Christian Calendar Project" How ironic. Someone who attempted to belittle my faith ends up driving me to a greater appreciation of Genesis.
  2. Egad! This is all the Catholics fault! [edit link] Thanks Greg. The seven days represent the points of a heptagram?!?!
  3. Living in California I deal with many atheists. Some are kind and respectful, some not so much. One of the less kind ones (a liberal arts major, a self professed "intellectual elite") got in a deep dig the other day. She told me that words Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday invoke Norse deities. Saturday is a little different, Saturday invokes a Greek deity. Is this true? How can I reconcile this? How do I live my life for Christ when I speak, write and think pagan incantations?

    Atheism

I had a strange thought about science and scientists. It is a little circuitous, so please try to bare with me. Objectivity is absolutely critical to science. Perhaps persons of complete faith can make good scientists. Because at their core they believe little of the science that they are working with they can bring an "arms-length" approach, a better emotional detachment to their work. There must be something wrong with my logic, but logic may not be my strong point.
  5. Brother Matrix, I believe that tribalism is the greatest limiting factor of the human condition. I believe that avoiding labels and above all, not labeling others is important. Perhaps neither the tribe of "science" or "faith" are ultimately served by tribalism. You clearly see the tribalism expressed so strongly by many my fellow believers. You cannot break them of it, tribalism persists, it resists breakage. I know you want very much to be the more reasonable person. Together we can start by serving love, kindness and goodness, each in our own way. I believe, that you believe that logic and reason will result in greater love, goodness and kindness. Can you believe that I believe that through Christ there will be more love, goodness and kindness. Let the "winners" and the "losers" be decided by love, kindness and goodness. I pray that in the end we all win.

Perhaps simple was the wrong word. It was my understanding that science is all about turning everything into expressible math. When there are two scientific equations that both, under all conditions produce identical results the more simple of the two is chosen. The more things that are brought into equations and the simpler these equations are is the so called progress of science. Ask any Atheist, they all love Occam's razor. Christ's love trumps any math, any equation.

    Atheism

Perhaps this conversation is to complicated. Atheists like the simple, the elegant and what they can comprehend. This is the greatest weakness of a Atheist, the minds God gifted us with are great, but not perfect. Atheists understand Christians when the Atheist realises that, to the Christian goodness, love and kindness is more important that whatever this generation's scientific theory dictates. Christians understand Atheists when they realise that they have fixation on this generation's perceived technical truth. This generation's perceived technical truth is transitory, temporary. Love, goodness and kindness is forever.
  8. Hear-hear. Be good. Be love. Connection to God is between God and his child. Feel God in your soul and let the love and kindness that results are a glow. That glow and the actions that result will be a beacon unto others. Be the connection. When others notice they may ask. When they ask tell them about the connection, the Saviour.
  9. Perhaps God wants his children to choose virtue. If Evil and Sin did not exist then it is not a choice. Is virtue truly virtue if there are no choices?
  10. How were you supposed to handle that? The same way our Saviour would have handled it. If this Mohammedan had told the King of Kings that he was not the son of God to his face I would imagine that he would have smiled, told them that he is sorry he feels that way and that he loves him as a brother none the less.
