[this was an essay that i didn't hand in because it mentioned GOd and the Bible. but now, reading over it, i know its probably the best i ever wrote. thought i would share it]
I've been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be young.
In the western world we have one of the longest periods of 'adolescence' in the world.
Adolescence is the period of time in which the transition between childhood and adulthood takes place and in which a person must achieve several physical, psychological, emotional and social standards set by the culture in which we live which dictate our ability to be seen as an adult in our culture.
In many cases, in order to be have a say in the happenings of our society, people's voices are not heard unless they are seen to be a 'responsible adult'.
This poses huge issues for young people who are desperate to have their voices heard.
I believe we live in a society full of young people desperate to have their voices and their views heard. This can be seen in the ways in which young people use the few avenues they are allowed to express their views in. It may be through blogging, forums, debating or through means which are typically seen as being less conventional such as graffitti, art or music. I believe as young people we have an amazing opportunity to impact the world around us by exercising our 'voice'.
I am tired of hearing people say that "the young people are our future".
Young people are the present. We are the here and now. We have views and ideas and desires and wishes and a conscience about the world around us.
Many of us are passionate about seeing a change take place in the world, to make it a better place both now and in the future. Unfortunately many of us will never get the change to stand in parliament and present our views and ideas and many people will not listen because we are seen to be "too young" or "too inexperienced".
There's a bible verse I love which now challenges me in the way that I live. It says:
"Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith and your purity." - 1 Tim. 4: 12 (NLT)
As young people we often hear people say that we cannot be influential because we are young.
But this bible verse suggests that this isn't the case. It suggests that we are not only influential when we exercise our voice but also by our very lives, by the way we act, by the way we love God and the way we love those around us, in the way we demonstate our faith and our purity.
The question is not whether we are influential but what kind of influence we want to be.
We have the ability to influence the world in a positive way or in a negative way by how we speak, live and love.
Rather than being people who remain silent and who let what is simply be even if it is not right, or who influence in a negative way, let's be people who live in a way which influences in a positive way, who change the world to be a better place.
