The tour is part of the Obama administration's outreach to the Muslim world. U.S. State Department documents show that the U.S. government is also funding the construction of mosques around the world as part of that outreach program. This year, the U.S. will spend $6 million to restore over 60 historic and cultural sites in 55 countries. That amount includes $76,000 for a 16th century mosque in China, $67,000 for a mosque in Pakistan, and $77,000 to restore minarets in Nigeria and Mauritania.
