For reference, the area mentioned along I-95 is almost half-way between DC and Baltimore.

Drove down a highway that is parallel to I-95. Big mistake! It was a MESS (with all the cars from the interstate on there).

Strong wind gusts fueled several fires across Maryland all day Saturday.

Prince George's County fire officials said officials closed Interstate 95 at Maryland Route 198 in Laurel at about 2:30 p.m. because of fire at a mulch plant, where piles of mulch have been burning out of control for hours.

The blaze jumped into the median of I-95, prompting state police to shut down the highway. Officials told 11 News that grassy areas were burning along the roadsides and median strips.

All off-duty firefighters were called to duty, and fire crews were still fighting the wind-driven brush fire Saturday night.

On Friday, a fire trapped 10 people in Elkridge, and a brush fire burned between Glen Burnie and Severn. Several more fires in Anne Arundel County burned Saturday.

Overnight, several fires strained firefighters in Baltimore County. Shortly after midnight, residents evacuated a nursing home in the Towson area amid a three-alarm fire.

Shortly thereafter, firefighters were called to a fire near Prettyboy Elementary School. A house was destroyed in the two-alarm fire.

On Saturday, strong winds knocked out power at a water pumping station, prompting authorities to request from customers to conserve water.

Saturday morning, a fire displaced University of Maryland students.

Saturday afternoon, SHA crews closed Pulaski Highway/U.S. Route 40 in both directions after a three-alarm fire ignited at a building in the 8500 block of Pulaski Highway in Rosedale. The fire broke out at about 2 p.m. No injuries have been reported.
