by Ken Kremer on January 14, 2012

Christmas Eve photo of the Strait of Hormuz from the International Space Station

This showcase image of the Strait of Hormuz (center) and the Persian Gulf region was shot on Christmas Eve, 24 December 2011. About 20% of the world’ s crude oil supply passes through the Strait every day. Iran has threatened to close the Strait to oil shipments. United Arab Emirates stands out in radiating bright lights (center), Iran (left) Note the thin atmosphere and curvature of the Earth. ISS module above.
