Anthem, America's second largest health insurer, has lost millions of customer records to hackers.

Anthem is known to have about 37 million customers using its health plans.

A further 32 million people are linked to it through its affiliates.

The attackers stole names, addresses, birthdays and social security numbers of customers from every one of Anthem's business units.

So far, Anthem has not said how many records were lost or how many people have been affected.

It has set up a website, called Anthem Facts, to advise customers about the breach and the action it is taking.

Your name, birthday and SSN  is all they need to do some major identity theft.  The company was trying reassure people that nothing like account numbers or credit card numbers were hacked, but so what?   Just a little information is all that is needed and you're sunk.

There has been a problem with medical information being hacked and used to commit fraud and help various druggies get narcotics under false pretenses.

But this doesnt sound like that kind of hack.

Lucky me. You can guess who Im insured with.

I don't think anyone is safe from hackers.  It it wasn't Anthem, it would have been someone else.   No matter how good the security is, there will be someone who will find a way around it.  Its the whole, 'better mousetrap, better mouse" thing over and over again.

One thing that occurred to me is whether or not the hackers are the ones who create the better security system.  They would best know how to get around the system.   Kind of like how the grave robbers in ancient eygpt were the same guys who designed the booby traps in the pyramids and tombs of the Pharoahs and thus knew how to get around them.

I don't think its too much of a leap from all these hack attacks to encouraging folks to accept biometric keys to access your accounts, i.e. something like a usb stick in the beginning to chips inserted under the skin eventually. All in the name of "peace and safety."
