Oh my goodness - it was . . .and is!

This is an historic tourist town near where I live - full of privately owned, well-loved restaurants and shops. It is one of the heartbeats of our county here in central Maryland. The flood took out the entire (and I do mean entire) Main Street section of the city. Other than the courthouse and other county-operating buildings up the hill and other homes up the hills, there isn't anything else to the town itself.

The water broke through some of the walls of the old, stone buildings, completely gutting the store/restaurant. The sidewalks caved in in several sections, exposing the utility works underneath. There are sinkholes in the street, exposing the foundations of some buildings. Some historic buildings are damaged beyond repair. The owners, most of whom live above their store or restaurant, are now jobless and homeless. Some businesses may never be able to come back (how does one replenish their antique store after losing all their unique antiques?).

We are all just heartbroken. So many memories washed away. Yes, we can rebuild. But it will never be the same.

I said a prayer :)

If anyone is interested, these photos were taken the day after the flood. I've heard it looks worse in person. I also found out that the homes and other buildings up-street (which is also uphill) from the Main Street section were also flood-damaged.
