Even human words can cause things to happen; so how much more powerful is the word of God? The writer may be comparing it to Ehud’s double-edged sword – the sword that suddenly dealt the death-blow to a wicked king and liberated the people of God (Judges 3:16). It’s a weapon that we also have authority to use (Ephesians 6:17) (Psalm 149:6,7). It’s something we should wield with confidence - but also with care, and with awe, submitting our own lives to its probing challenge (Psalm 19:11). God’s word has the power and authority of God Himself to reach right down into our deceitful hearts and expose our sin for what it is. As we read the Bible, we meet God Himself – awesome and holy, yet also loving and merciful. Like a surgeon’s scalpel, His word penetrates our minds and souls, and deals with what it finds there.
