We have to use the Word of God to determine what a phrase means, rather than going by how it sounds. I DO understand that it sounds like someone feeling "bitter" towards someone else, but in context, it is really about disobedience and false worship worming it's way into the body to contaminate and defile. This is what has always been the downfall of God's people, they get involved in another gospel/another god, that is not based upon God's Word and what He established. Deuteronomy 29:18 Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. Hebrews 12:15 See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
