What Israel sought so earnestly it did not obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened, as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so that they could not see and ears so that they could not hear, to this very day." (Deut 29:4; Is 29:10) He spoke of this concept previously in Rom 9:17,18 which seemed to allude to God's dealing with the proud. So also here in view of the Israelites misbehavior in the wilderness as the quote comes from Deut 29:4. And as noted previously, there is cooperation involved in the hardening of the heart as it is written, "do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert". Heb 3:8 The hardening of the heart results in a desensitivity to the things of God, and again is alluded to in Isaiah 29:10 which again seems to be God's reaction to the misbehavior of the Israelites, as also mentioned in Isaiah 6:9,10, which is also quoted in Matthew 13:13-15 and John 12:38-40 concerning unbelieving Jews. In fact the very beginning of Isaiah reveals the real problem. "Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand." Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him." Isaiah 1:2-4 Paul described in more detail the process of becoming desensitized to spiritual things in Romans chapter 1, where for example he said, "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened." Rom 1:21 and "Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done."
